Accused robber ‘under observation’ after suspected suicide attempt

An accused robber is currently under ‘close observation’ at the Peebles Hospital after he was reportedly found inside his Road Town Police Station jail cell with injuries consistent with a suicide attempt.

That is according to a report from the Information Unit of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) on Tuesday, June 26.

The accused man has been identified as Mervin Flaherty, whose name is associated with other alleged criminal antecedents.

The RVIPF said Flaherty had to be ‘immediately transported’ to the medical facility when they intercepted the suspected suicide attempt.  He is now in stable condition.

Meanwhile, police only charged Flaherty last Friday (June 22) for an armed robbery that happened nearly a year ago.

Police said Flaherty was identified as the lone masked gunman who ‘entered’ a business in Port Purcell in July of 2017. There were no reports of injury from that incident.

Commenting on the retroactive bust, Deputy Commissioner of Police Alwin James said: “This arrest is indicative that investigations are continuing in all these matters as detectives work behind the scenes to see that those who commit firearms offences are identified and charged”.

He further reiterated the RVIPF’s commitment to seeing criminals apprehended and brought to justice.
