Alliance seeks feedback on constitutional review recommendations

Opposition members of the Alliance have launched a public consultation on the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Commission, encouraging residents to share their views before the House of Assembly resumes debate on the matter next week.

Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn, Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull, and Territorial At Large Representative Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather are leading the initiative, urging residents to participate in the review process through a public questionnaire. The House of Assembly is expected to reconvene on Monday, October 13 2025, to examine and determine the next steps for each of the Commission’s recommendations.

According to the Alliance, the constitution belongs to every Virgin Islander, and as such, public input is essential before lawmakers proceed. “The Alliance members recognise that the constitution belongs to all of us and so would like your voice to be heard in the committee stage of the review,” the group stated.

Residents are being encouraged to visit the Alliance VI Facebook page to complete an online survey, which outlines over 50 recommendations from the Constitutional Review Commission. The form covers wide-ranging issues such as transparency and public participation, recall provisions for elected officials, term limits for the Premier, and the establishment of an Integrity Commission.

Other recommendations open for public comment include introducing fixed schedules for the House of Assembly, amending the preamble to make it more inclusive, creating a Human Rights Commission, and enacting laws to ensure administrative and financial independence for oversight bodies.

The Alliance’s consultation also raises constitutional questions regarding the right to education, the participation of public servants in political life, the administration of Crown lands, and proposals related to self-determination.

The Commission’s report, submitted earlier this year, outlined areas for strengthening democratic governance, improving accountability, and modernising the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007. It also called for measures to clarify the separation of powers between the Executive and the Legislature and to increase citizen involvement in national decision-making.

Members of the public can access the full list of recommendations through the Alliance VI Facebook page or request an electronic copy from any Alliance district office. “Let your opinion count!” the group urged.

It’s wonderful that this is being done. One of the few times we’ve been asked what we think about anything. However, a lot of the questions are difficult to answer as there is no education available about what some of the questions mean, so difficult to form an opinion to answer.

So my input in the Constitutional Review was a waste of time Mr Alliance? You guys continue to be divisive. Why not join in with the Constitutional Review team to see how the existing process could be improved? Why is it always to pull away and do your own thing? I hope the people really seeing these judases for who they really are. their way or the highway. Victimization will soon follow any time they are in power.

Great initiative by the Alliance. Don’t be bothered by the nay-sayers. Those are political haters who vex they didn’t think about doing this before. You three gentlemen showed me that you want to make a difference.
