American Airlines to increase winter flights to BVI

American Airlines (AA) will be doubling the number of flights to the territory for the winter season, which starts in December.

The announcement comes just two weeks into the airline’s new direct service between Miami and the BVI. The added flights are expected to begin in December 2023, and will see AA increasing flights on the new direct route from once daily to twice daily, according to a release published on the airline’s website yesterday.

The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) said the increase in AA’s scheduled flights will have a further positive impact on passenger movements at the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island.

“This latest development demonstrates a high level of confidence in the BVI as a top tourism destination which is in high demand,” Managing Director of the BVIAA, Kurt Menal stated,

He added that it also demonstrates confidence in the capabilities of the BVIAA to handle increased number of flights and greater passenger movements, and to provide quality service to travellers.

AA launched its daily direct service between the BVI and Miami on June 1, 2023. However, due to high demand, the airline was moved to schedule five additional flights for the month of June, even before its inaugural flight took place.

The airline’s initial schedule for the direct service was projected to increase passenger movements at the Beef Island-based airport by more than 19,000 passengers in 2023. With the latest announcement, however, AA will now drive passenger movements to more than 22,000 passengers.

With the new AA direct service coupled with the recovery of the global tourism and travel industry, the BVIAA had initially projected an increase in passenger movements by more than 40 per cent for this year, in comparison to 2022 figures.

Doesn’t this prove that we do NOT need a longer runway?

We have to wait a while to see how this plays out, but what I am thinking is that these flights from Miami to the BVI is going to hurt other carriers like the ferries, and the small planes that connect us with Puerto Rico. The water taxi between the BVI and USVI might be a thing of the past, hopefully none of this will happen but there is a possibility.

is a word used to often in these news articles about AA flights between Miami and Tortola. It would be more accurate to just list the dates that 1 or 2 AA planes will fly this route. For example there were AA flights on June 1,3 and 9. Next AA flights in June are on the 16th and 30th.

Hardly we need the runway like yesterday. We need flights to other US airports. If wind is from a strange direction payload will be reduced.
