Anegada needs more than policing
While admitting that there is a need for more police personnel on Anegada, Governor John Rankin said it will take more than law enforcers to stop the efforts of those who are attempting to use the island for the transhipment of narcotics.
“Work is certainly required to help to prevent misuse of the airport runway for the transhipment of illicit drugs and that may involve more resources not just for the police but from the Airport Authority and in relation to Customs and Immigration,” Governor Rankin said at a press conference on September 29.
He pointed out that “other than the security aspect” the airport does not fall under his direct control but added that his office must work jointly with airport authorities to improve the security of Anegada.
At the same time, Governor Rankin said effective policing is only a fraction of the whole problem on Anegada.
“It’s partly a matter of effective policing. It’s also a matter of ensuring that the overall security arrangements at the airport are safe. And frankly, the community on Anegada also needs to cooperate with us to bring an end to what is happening,” Governor Rankin stated.
Anegada made headlines in recent weeks after a plane carrying several kilograms of cocaine crashed at the Captain Auguste George Airport. The drugs were seized but many believe that plane was a decoy to allow the movement of a larger quantity of drugs through the BVI’s borders.
A similar incident happened on Anegada in August.

turn up the heat / they using their racial lyrics as distraction to cover their CLANDISTINE CRIMINAL OPERATIONS so don’t mind yhe noise WE all can see the GAMES that they are playing , make sure you get ALL the PLAYERS , who think they are ( TOO SMART TO BE CAUGHT ) THE COUNTRY NEEDS A THOROUGH CLEANSING FROM THESE ANIMALS/ EXPOSE THEM
As long as we have a criminal supporting and corrupt government (looking at you W’s and DC), the crime and violence will not stop.
for a UK military training base on Anegada. The US Navy used Anegada and Vieques for military training in the 20th century so why not the 21st?
Extend the runway for military transport aircraft to fly in the recruits and the training staff. Good location for desert warfare training, air and sea surveillance exercises, target practice, etc.
BVI’s third pillar of the economy could be the UK military replacing the smuggling pillar.
LOL the BVI’s version of the Bahamas Norman Cay
@ Time
I like your train of thought….they can also have R&R on other Islands contributing to the entire economy as well. We just have to pay close attention to polution.
Hear this DANGEROUS MAN SPEAKING! BVI Customs have been relegated to clearing goods and charging duties, they have been sidelined by the RVIPF who now calls on US Customs to assist them. Now hear this dangerous individual talking about help needed from Customs.
Right because the UK Military would never get involved in drugs themselves. Bravo, bring em on!
The million dollar question is why does Anegada have only 1 police officer? What is the rationale for that? We have so many recruits each year, and Anegada which has its own population, businesses and vibrant community only need 1 police? Is he a robot who doesn’t sleep or take a day off? So of course while our one-24 hour police is in the middle of sleep, the drugs will come in. Anywhere open to lack of law enforcement, is a wide open gate for crime to manifest and for the safe passage of drugs.
We know about 2 planes bringing in drugs in the last couple months. How many planes have successfully landed in Anegada, dropped drug cargo and left without the media knowing about it? I can almost bet that there are countless, because its an open port.
Mr. Governor, who is head of security, please staff the police station in Anegada. In this day and age, we should not have a one-man police department. Who will look over who? While you’re at it, fix and staff our other police stations and have them staffed and running properly. We are happy when there is no reported crime, but it only takes 1 incident where someone urgently needs police intervention and a family has to grieve because of it.
The news this morning said that no arrests have been made in Anegada? So you expect the one police officer to be the DPP, AG and Commissioner too? Come on Mr. Rankin
I am in total agreement more official government involvement of all kinds is needed to combat all of those who launder or use drug filled shortcuts to try to have a Majestic Life.
Calling on the UK and the Wyt man to dismantle this Black on Black crime.
How would this work if we were NDEPENDENT..no money even for maintaining the street,,How we will pay for Police and Policing?
That one Police on Anegada is within the BVI budget in affordability, maybe, so keep that in mind when blabla about Independence.
Consider that the GOV proposed emergency temporary changes in order to more effectively attack drug and ammunition trafficking in the BVI.
Our elected Government disagreed abd so disallowed the changes.
Sowande as head of v this farce abd joke of a Gk v e t n h ent mshoild be place in handcuffs and charged with obstruction, aiding and abetting,
The drugs been coming in and passing through, leaving some money behind to keep the economy going. These young idiots spoil the whole show with the showing off and senseless killings.
and let the fox in to do the same thing?
