Another major fire flares in Pockwood Pond
A major fire has flared up at the waste site in Pockwood Pond, Tortola and authorities are working feverishly to “fully extinguish the smouldering fire and secure the site”.
The fire was reported at the location around 9pm Friday night, August 24.
Authorities have reportedly contained the blaze but the site continues to heavily emit smoke, the Department of Waste Management said.
“Access to the hillside sections of the facility will remain restricted until further notice, and residents are urged to strictly adhere to the directions given by workers when disposing of waste on the site,” the department said in a media update on Saturday.
“Persons with respiratory illnesses, particularly asthma are advised to leave areas affected by smoke until it subsides,” it added.
This is at least the third major fire to affect a local dump in recent months.

What a SHAME!!!!!!!!
Mr Premier, please accept responsibility for this! Put it out or resign.
The whole system need upgrading …people West been getting poisoned all year and the the premier doesn’t give a damn..
The governor should require some recovery money’s spent on a new disposal facility
Look how the BVI is being fckd up…Just look at it
another suspicious fire started?

Since our leaders have failed over the last year to come up with a plan I’ll suggest a simple solution.
Starting immediately we should enter an agreement to export all of our garbage by barge to a neighboring country. We should immediately transfer the management of the dump to a contracted third party who will contractually agree to safely remove the rubbish until a long term solution is identified. Finally, for the longer term solution, we should create a well organized contest and actively encourage Global experts to submit proposals for the design, development and management of an environmentally and efficient world class solution to this problem. (It won’t cost anything to create this competition.) The proposed solutions could be reviewed and decided upon by the general public without the typical kickbacks to ministers.
under NDP fires all over da place, smh
really?
How the h**l do you justify have an incinerator that produces nothing but poisonous smoke next to a diesel burning power plant? This looks so backward.
That fire have been burning from Thursday the sun is so hot with hot air and dry grass it will be difficult to control if it get worst than this meanwhile The fire is so close mto a power plant if anything goes wrong tortola will be in darkness. The other dump site is still burning this does not look good.
at the end of the day we throwing away a lot of stuff some that should not be exposed to the sun.. There are bins out for bulk waste yet house hold trash is still being tossed into them.. we are all to be blamed
Don’t be so quick to make such judgment. Not everyone do that. But from your comment you are guilty of it and need to stop. After the hurricane, there was absolutely no proper waste management and to date, the entrance to that site is opened and unmanaged.
“Persons with respiratory illnesses, particularly asthma are advised to leave areas affected by smoke until it subsides,” it added. Let me find out there’s a free hotel some where!! WHERE DO YOU WANT US TO GO?? DO YOU HAVE SPACE AT YOUR HOUSE FOR ME AND MINE?????
Isn’t it strange how as soon as the government gets involved in moving these waste piles they mysteriously catch fire.
