Archer allowed to chair Cabinet meetings | Fraser still boycotting?

Claude Skelton Cline

Talk show host Claude Skelton Cline has claimed that members of the government have given in to public pressure and are now allowing Deputy Governor David Archer to chair Cabinet meetings in the Governor’s absence.

Governor Daniel Pruce is currently out of the territory and is expected to resume duties in early August. Archer has been directed to chair Cabinet in the interim, but recent reports indicated that some meetings were missed due to the lack of a quorum. The absence of a quorum was reportedly the result of ministers refusing to attend meetings chaired by the Deputy Governor, who is a non-elected official.

Skelton Cline, who brought the matter to light on his Honestly Speaking radio show, has criticised the leaders who oppose Archer’s leadership and called for unity among public officials.

Speaking on his programme this week, the outspoken clergyman said it was public backlash that prompted government members to return to the table.

“Sometimes politicians only move as a result of pressure – Cabinet meetings are being had with our Virgin Islander Deputy Governor chairing,” Skelton Cline stated.

While the number of ministers opposed to Archer’s role remains unclear, Deputy Premier Julian Fraser has reportedly been among those objecting to the arrangement.

According to Skelton Cline, most of the objecting ministers have since relented, but Fraser is said to continue boycotting Cabinet, citing constitutional provisions that suggest Cabinet should be chaired by the Premier or Deputy Premier when the Governor is unavailable.

Skelton Cline has called for a constitutional review to clarify the rules governing Cabinet proceedings but maintained that government business must not be stalled over technical disagreements.

That’s just a taste of what will be if this place ever becomes independent. They don’t want the Governor but they want the Governor, make up you all minds! You don’t want the colonial master (as you all keep saying) to oversee but when one of your own in the position you don’t support him and show up and do what WE put you all there to do. Because it is not just the Deputy Governor you are insulting, it’s everyone who voted for your all sorry @@@@ that you all are insulting! You are there to serve the people, stop thinking you are entitled to the position and can do what you want! This government has too much double standards!

I’m wondering why government can’t obtain a legal opinion and publish it to the public for such matters.

We got so much law firms here and a legal opinion on this would only be about 5k, as opposed to all the moneys that get spent daily.
