Asian restaurant in Road Town ordered to cease operations

An Asian restaurant located in Road Town was ordered to temporarily cease operations after a video of improper food preparation measures began circulating locally.

The Environmental Health Division issued the order this week.

Speaking about the matter on ZBVI radio, Chief Environmental Officer Lionel Michael said his department was alerted about the video on Wednesday.

“One of the central issues that was observed in the video and what we found is how food is being thawed or defrost, as we say. That is a recurring problem in establishments where food is just left on the counter, on the kitchen sink overnight — it is put out in the sun,” Michael explained.

“Those practises were such that they could have led to food-borne disease, food-borne illnesses or what is commonly called food poisoning in customers. So we got the notification, we swiftly responded and we ordered that the food business cease all operation in handling and preparing food which includes the preparation, cooking, serving, and storage of food,” he added.

Further explaining the mechanism that causes food-related illnesses, Michael said the conditions under which the restauranteurs in question thawed their food could lead to an increase in bacteria and microorganisms.

And although cooking is a good preventative measure, Michael said cooking does not destroy the toxins of microorganism that may be in food.

Meanwhile, the food establishment must suspend operations until they’re able to “put the recommended corrective measures in place”.

“We’re trying to organise some training for them because training will help to strengthen their capacity to prevent some of those illnesses,” Michael stated.

The business, in the meantime, is said to have already begun correcting the issues identified.

Other food establishments are reminded to ensure they practise proper hygiene and food preparation techniques.

they been doing this for years and many of you saw them doing it and still went there to buy food. all of a sudden someone records it and it is a big fuss when we saw them do it on many other occasions. yes some people may have not been aware but if your in town around that area you would have seen them do it as they wasn’t hiding. So please stop acting new and want jump on the band wagon to bash them now, it didn’t stop you from eating or buying from them in the past.

Restaurant and take out food is for tourists. Grow or buy your food at the market, prepare and cook it yourself then eat at home before and after work. Take your own food to work; it’s healthy and saves time and money during the work day.

Why we defending an unsanitary situation, it’s unsanitary what they did and it’s a violation to our health, so authorities suppose to play blind eye to this particular situation wrong is wrong no matter who it is

  18. Caribbean Girl says:

Health Department needs to keep an eye on them. The chicken van on the TPP defrost the chickens in the sun, all spreading on tables exposed to dirt in the air, flying insects and who knows what else. Once a year Health Department conference for Health Cards are not enough. Regular inspections are needed.

  19. Nastiness says:

People you all need to learn to cook your own food I am a restaurant worker I work at several restaurants and I never eat from not one even though lunch and breakfast is free the way in which they treat the food that they sell to people I don’t know how some of these places still open to the public. I walk with my food from home. If the health inspector show up unannounced a lot of these places would be closed down. A supermarket that sell cook food how on earth people buy food from there the stench inside and outside would make anyone vomit.

  20. Hmmm says:

And, how many cases of food poisoning have been attributed to this restaurant? WIll this prompt the Health Dept to inspect other eating establishments?

  21. Lipidee says:

I could never understand why Caribbean people eat Asian food. There is nothing at all healthy or appealing about that stuff.

In addition to our own Caribbean food, I would love to see some African restaurants here, Never mind the lies the American media go out of their way to tell about African culture.
