Board, secretariat to be established to manage Road Town

The Road Town area.

The government will be establishing a board of governors for the territory’s capital city, Road Town.

While delivering his Speech from the Throne address yesterday to detail the government’s legislative agenda for the year ahead, Governor John Rankin said the board is being formed as part of a larger move to make the capital city more appealing, pedestrian-friendly, and more accessible.

“Government will seek to amend the Wickham’s Cay Development Authority Act (CAP. 281) to introduce a board and a secretariat as integral parts of the Authority for the management of day-to-day operations in the city of Road Town,” Rankin said.

“The amended Act will also ensure that, as a territory, we continue to make good on the 99-year Wickham’s Cay leases and preserve the history of Wickham’s Cay,” he added.

The vision for the territory’s capital as well as the wider territory also includes amending the Road Traffic Act (CAP. 218) to modernise the legislation with an emphasis on further development.

Governor Rankin said this amendment will address vehicular noise pollution, modernise speed limits, address vehicles transporting unsecured items or materials, and upgrade roadways to be more accessible for differently-abled persons.

The amendment will also update traffic fines and penalties used to regulate and control road traffic, Rankin said.

I have never heard of a “board of governors” for a city, town or village in the U.K. This is not a U.K. thing.
Also, please be aware that the speech from the throne is the governor reading from a list of things that the National Unity Government has said they are going to do. It is not a list of things that the Governor or the U.K. are planning to do.

But there is already a Wickhams cay development. What the UK is doing is worst than direct rule. They are stripping the Government of all its direct power because boards are under the Governor. These buffoons in this unity Government are the weakest set of politicians ever. They are destroying the country.

  5. Uhhhh- it's called planning or urban planning. says:

The only charming parts of Road Town, are some of Main Street, a few areas built before 1985 and the cruise ship dock. Otherwise, our little capital that should be easy to navigate and charming to look at is an unpleasant to walk, heat island eyesore.

It’s about time we take control of our surroundings. Thanks, we need to do this.

Seems seems like another layer of useless and unnecessary bureaucracy. The simple fix is to enforce the law. Enforce it equally without preference based on who the violates may or may not be. Our problem is that instead of directly addressing the core problem, create new ways to address issues that are not the really the problem. There are laws on the books addressing each of these maladies. Put people in place to enforce the laws and give them the support and resources necessary to do just that. A Board of Governors seems like a misdirection. Just saying.

Why not create and board for the Pockwood Pond fiasco. Why not budget to fix the problem. They throw away millions and millions on frivilous BS! A million spent on an elevator, why? Walk up the damn stairs! Why are we still forced to breathe toxic air. Neither party..NDP or VIP ever addressed this major human rights issue! WHY WHY WHY
And now after all that has happened and been exposed .. the same set of people are still in control and runnung things and still squandering what funds they have.
