BVI could name a consul general in Guyana
In a bid to establish stronger economic and political ties, the BVI may name a consul general to strengthen its relations with Guyana.
This is the indication that Minister for Financial Services, Labour, and Trade, Lorna Smith made recently as she discussed the BVI’s plans to foster further collaboration with Guyana.
Smith said the government hasn’t decided on the kind of representative the BVI will have to take care of matters with Guyana, but she said there are a few possibilities they are looking at.
“It’s still going around in my mind as to what the best entity is. We already have a couple of businesses that started in Guyana from the BVI. We have one ICT company and one insurance brokerage firm. These are two possibilities we might use but we might go with a completely different entity like a consul general. There are all kinds of possibilities,” Smith explained.
She added: “We do know that we must have some entity on the ground if we are going to follow up very closely in terms of the relationship and the kind of business we want to forge between Guyana and the BVI.”
The BVI has been taking steps to establish stronger links with Guyana as the country has become attractive to investors since it found oil reserves off its coast. The BVI is looking to expand its financial services business to Guyana as global investors get ready to do more business with Guyana.
The news that the BVI may declare a new diplomat to Guyana comes amid plans to lift the visa requirement that is currently in place for Guyanese travellers.
Minister Smith said this will happen in short order and is necessary if the BVI intends to build a stronger relationship with Guyana.

OMG
Before Gayana discover Oil, they were treated like Dogs by the BVI people , suddenly their are now the best a friends , WOW ,, life is Funny .
Good plan albeit late. Perhaps Guyana should be a lesson going forward that instead of being reactive and friendly to a Country after they have come into good fortune; we should be looking at emerging markets and giving a hand up before-when they actually need the assistance. .Those Countries will be forever grateful and we would be given the first consideration.
Lorna you need to come to the people and in clear detail say what you are doing and why. You behaving like some of the politicians in VIP and NDP who has us where we are today. You need to put special interests aside and focus on domestic issues.
Remember your reputation as being one of the persons responsible for Lavity’s success is at stake. Ralph failed as a leader and you failed to advise Olando properly now you are in the driver’s seat off to a bad start.
@corps diplomatique, I beleive you know what it takes to get a British Overseas citizen passport or Diplomatic Passport. That the business of UK not BVI
That is the way it is in real life . Give and Tke…recipricacity.
Planting yourself poor as dirt in a lillil country suckjng dem dry and filling up their prisons social systems is no way to live and be relevant.
This madness is why VI have a dearth of sing-song semi literate hungry parasitic fireigners crawling like fleas all over lil Tola.
Exchange and paying
your way is a foreign concept to too many of the melanated imports.
You people elected an elitist and expect to get honey and milk. Not from Lorna! She will continue to look out for her family and cr**ked friends.
She is a one term Rep. You all will learn!
Lorna in we corner. Advance seize the moment thinking, preparation and action.
Before oil discovery,Guiana has been blessed with plenty natural resources.
Like the other Caribbean countries that are low on the pole of self sufficiency which has do with the character if it’s people and a Spiritual barrier.
Personnally I am of the opinion that this oil will be another resource from which the people l es of Guiana fail upward mobility and comfortable living.
True and lasting Prosperity has a Spiritual component to which they are unable to access and sustain.
I do wish that they could rise above and take the leave of these VI, They brought nothing, expressed no gratitude but did spill blood on our soil, add ing to their cursedness and negative Karma.
Stop! We, Guyanese, are living in those people’s countries for decades. Matter of facts, a quarter of some of those countries population are Guyanese. Check it out.
Ummm, partna, you do know milk & honey is a laxative, right? LMAO!! I didn’t vote for a laxative….
Lorna in she own corner like she has always been.
Hmm
Just an Idea. I think the Deputy would make a great Consulate General in Guyana for a year or two just like in the London House back in 2003.
