BVI named 2nd runner-up in global pageant
Local beauty Syvanna Charles copped the second runner-up position in the recently-held Miss Plus-size Universe competition.
The event was held on Saturday at Sunset Shores Beach Hotel in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
On her way to the top-three, Charles won the Best Eveningwear and Best Question & Answer segments of the competition.
Nine other young ladies participated in the pageant with St Lucia’s Annabel Rollins taking home the crown.
“This is the first time winning the second runner up position, but I don’t take winning or losing too seriously,” Charles, a 24-year-old teacher at the Elmore Stoutt High School told BVI News.
“At the end of the day, I had fun and it was something that I always wanted to do – to be on stage and to perform,” she added.
The 2017 Miss Big, Bold and Beautiful winner left the island last Tuesday and returned on Sunday night.
“Everything was pretty much smooth sailing. I met persons from all around the world – from Europe, Africa and other Caribbean islands and I made some lasting friendships,” she said while reflecting on her experience.
Charles who is no stranger to the world of pageantry chaperoned herself and said private residents assisted her through sponsorship to participate in the show.

Congrats! A beautiful and well spoken young lady, not surprised she did so well
I was pretty impressed after hearing a record of Ms. Charles as she responded to the question asked. It was impressive to hear how she fluently articulated her response. He choice of words and use of quality diction and intonation was AWESOME!!! It brought the house down.
