BVI needs proper water, sewerage infrastructure to develop tourism

Opposition legislator and former Works Minister, Mark Vanterpool.

Fourth District Representative Mark Vanterpool said new and improved infrastructure is needed to grow tourism in the Virgin Islands.

Vanterpool was referring to the territory having a good supply of water and proper control of its sewerage network so visitors can enjoy the BVI without the associated problems.

“If Water & Sewerage fall short of that infrastructure, you’re going to have the problems in Virgin Gorda as they did for Christmas in July. I overheard the current Junior Minister for Trade and Development harassing the minister for water. Minister, we had a lot of people coming to Virgin Gorda for Christmas in July and the water was a problem,” said Vanterpool, who was at the time giving his contribution to the House of Assembly’s debate on a bill seeking to establish the Water and Sewerage Department as a statutory body,

“And indeed, it will be a problem when I see all those people in Virgin Gorda. All those people and you have a water shortage. That is not good news. So, this infrastructure is needed to make sure that going forward we can grow tourism and grow tourism with a good supply of water and good control of sewerage,” the Fourth District Representative stated.

He continued: “I don’t even want to talk about all of those who live here who don’t want to go on the road and smell the sewerage if we pass Road Town and all over the place; and the fact that we have a sewerage plant that we developed down in Burt Point and the sewerage plant is sitting there doing nothing after hurricane and Water & Sewerage, as a department, can’t get it up and running.”

He elaborated that the seriousness of what he was discussing is that the government wants to develop a tourism product but cannot develop infrastructure that is going to serve the needs of the territory.

for Tortola. Maybe their is hope to improve the infrastructure on VG, JVD and Anegada to attract land tourists.

Marine tourism is the future of the BVI. Land tourism is dying on Tortola.

Mark you and Fraser were both ministers for the subject area and failed the territory miserably! You went in and made a total muck of the ministry. Your focus was on what YOU could obtain by deception and malfeasances. Crawl back under whatever it is you have been up under until your number is called. Many generations will view you and this current crop as abject failures in the annals of VI History. That is you all legacies!!

  7. informed says:

There is a multi million dollar sewage treatment plant sitting at Burt point not working since Irma.
I guess once the money has been stolen they just ditch the project. All the work digging up the roads and creating pot holes and everything is just abandoned.

  8. Truth says:

Any place else in the world where the water & sewerage infrastructure is in the state we know it’s bad people would be sent home. Only in the BVI people are rewarded for negative accomplishments. We promote them for poor management. The managers are valued more than the customers and staff. Do you want to know if you have good management? Take a look at the Water and sewage facilities. Tortola base is abandoned, VG- well they using a tree for shelter. Jost Van Dyke was destroyed by Irma they use the vehicle as an office.

  9. Popeye says:

    What about a post office?

  10. Really? says:

    Only now you notice?

  11. @Truth says:

And these “managers” get good pay & good pensions on retirement… for doing nothing for 30 years!

  12. Roads says:

Wouldn’t better roads help tourism too????

  13. Theo says:

Govt should do something about it……….wait a second

I can see the realization gradually dawning on him that people only like/liked him because of his position and power.

He loses that and he is nobody.

They all think everyone is stupid enough to buy his manure.

People only bought his manure because they had no choice. So keep looking like you have brilliant original ideas dear leader, I can see you’ve come to realize that you’ve brought your own reckoning upon yourself.

  15. Theo says:

Clearly Action Man has hired new advisors.

One kid from every Primary school in the territory.

Hope he’s compensating fairly and not just promising them candy.
