BVI scores high at regional crossfit competition
A 13-man and woman team from CrossFit Castaway in the British Virgin Islands took three podium spots in a regional competition held in St. Lucia on November 25, despite being without an indoor gym for almost three months.
The CrossFit Castaway gym located in Port Purcell on Tortola was destroyed by Hurricane Irma, causing the team to train outdoors, often in rain and mud.
The team grabbed first, second and third spots in three categories: Women’s Scaled event, Men’s Scaled event and RX division.
Zoe Sorrentino took first place in the Women’s Scaled event, while Julien Johnson took second place in the Men’s scaled event. Caroline Sorrentino came in third place in the women’s RX division.
The competition was geared at showing strength, effort, energy, skill, endurance and willpower.
During the Rx event the athlete had to perform all exercises using the prescribed weight and repetitions with no modifications or scaling with full range of motion. The Scaled event is defined as the same workout but with slightly lighter weights and/or repetitions.
Athletes from Barbados, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, St. Lucia and the BVI, formed part of the competition, which was held at the Beausejour Indoor Facility.
Coach of Team CrossFit Castaway, Caroline Sorrentino remarked: “We were made to feel very welcome by CrossFit 758 and we look forward to representing the BVI in future competitions throughout the region.”
