BVIEC takes on solar street light project
The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is rolling out a solar street light project across the territory.
In a recent public bulletin, the BVIEC announced that the project will initially focus on select areas, including Pockwood Pond to Towers, the Sunny Caribee parking lot, the Great Harbour Sea Front in Jost Van Dyke, North Sound Road in Virgin Gorda, and the Claudia Creque Centre road in Anegada.
This initiative is part of a broader shift towards renewable energy for the power company. Earlier this year, BVIEC launched the Solar Technology Energy Programme (STEP), aimed at providing financial relief to residents facing rising electricity bills.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, who also serves as Minister of Finance, highlighted in a press conference on September 30 that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is being developed between the BVI and Guyana. He noted that this MOU will support the STEP initiative, which aims to install solar panels on roofs locally. The project was commissioned by the Ministry of Communication and Works.
The Wheatley administration has been fostering closer diplomatic relations with Guyana in recent times, recognising the country’s success in renewable resources. As a result of these strengthened ties, the BVI announced that Guyanese nationals will no longer require visas to travel to the territory.

Like this was rocket science
Good storm, and these should all disappear! I like the idea, but things designed better for high winds would seem more logical.
on Tortola have to be heavy, large and deep with lots of large heavy rocks protecting the base of the pole(like armour). These light poles are a magnet for the big heavy trucks on the roads of Tortola. Easier to fix the truck than the light pole after a collision.
BVIEC new GM is doing a good job. IF we start replacing all the streetlights for solar ones and also bury the electrical cables while PWD is fixing the roads we will have a more resilient system.
We will also need additional lights as the streets have fewer than before Irma.
It takes the bvi a 100 years to do this all the other Caribbean Islands already done this.
Great idea now we will be able to see the pot holes better at night.
You guys really give good comedy on these chats. thank you . Laughter is medicine for the soul.
so when yall gonna really invest into solar as an alternative for when yall cutting power for maintance, poles falling and incoming storms
get them big windmill or a nice big solar grid stop making us live in 3rd world
Best to put the ones back on Georgie’s Hill first. Always a new project. Never repairing and maintaining what is/was already there.
BUT YET THEY DONT WATNT U TO USE SOLAR ENERGY TO CUT YOUR BILLS DOWN
Good hurricane food feh shore. Now who would put such a monstrocity on a pole in hurricane alley? Only a dungle would.
The only thing I want to hear out of bviec is that they finally got their online payment up and running hm
