BVIEC trains linesmen to help reduce power outages

Amid frequent power outages across the territory, the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has launched a specialised training programme to equip lineworkers with the skills needed to perform maintenance and repairs on live electrical lines.

The 12-week Live-Line Training Programme is nearing completion for its first cohort of linesmen, who are being trained to carry out work on energised power lines safely and efficiently, without the need for planned outages.

The initial group includes Ronald Baird, Damian Richardson, Edward Pollock, and Shaquil Samuel. They are training under the expert guidance of Tim Self, owner of Tim Self Powerline Safety and Training.

The programme combines classroom instruction, hands-on practice with de-energised lines, and practical exercises on live lines to prepare participants for real-world challenges.

Tim Self highlighted both the safety and customer service advantages of the initiative: “The added benefit is that we no longer have to de-energise lines for routine work. What would normally take hours of outages can now be done seamlessly, with customers not even noticing any interruption.”

Minister for Communications and Works Kye Rymer praised the initiative, describing it as a forward-thinking step that will strengthen the reliability of the territory’s power grid and build local capacity.

“It enhances the reliability of the territory’s power infrastructure and demonstrates a commitment to investing in the professional development of the BVIEC’s workforce,” Minister Rymer said.

The BVIEC says it plans to expand the programme to include more lineworkers in the future as part of its long-term goal to improve energy resilience and reduce service disruptions across the Virgin Islands.

I would prefer they turn off the electricity than engage in risky procedures.

It is a noble idea, however why take unnecessary risk with the life of the linesmen. For instance I have seen instance where Utility Companies announce the schedule for maintenance work that is to take place. If done right then only a few blocks at a time has to be de-energised.
