The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has announced that its online payment system is fully restored nearly three months after a cyberattack disrupted operations.
In an update on Monday, November 4, BVIEC stated, “We’ve worked hard over the past few months since our incident to restore this much-needed convenience for our valued customers.”
The BVIEC thanked customers for their patience and assured them of the corporation’s commitment to “safety, security, and convenience in all our services.”
The mid-August cyberattack, identified as a ransomware attack, impacted both internal and external operations, crippling the power company’s online systems. BVIEC previously announced it would not negotiate with hackers for the return of any stolen data, focusing instead on restoring functionality while maintaining uninterrupted power services for customers.
During the outage, customers were asked to make payments in person and provide receipts of past payments to help estimate billing, as BVIEC’s digital management systems were temporarily inoperative.
BVIEC General Manager Neil Smith noted that the corporation’s priority has been to secure its systems rather than track down those responsible for the attack.
