The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) introduced two state-of-the-art ambulances to its fleet, bringing a significant upgrade to emergency medical services to the territory. This move expands the fleet and significantly boosts the emergency response capabilities throughout the islands.

One of the ambulances was funded by the Health Ministry while the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) stepped in to provide the second ambulance, specifically designated for service on Virgin Gorda.

The ambulances are equipped with the latest in medical technology and staffed by teams of highly trained healthcare professionals and represent a major step forward for the BVIHSA.

During the handover ceremony, Acting CEO of BVIHSA Dr June Samuel and Health Minister Vincent Wheatley shared their insights on the impact the ambulances will have on the territory’s healthcare services. Both emphasised the collaborative efforts and the shared dedication to improving community well-being.

Wheatley highlighted the ambulances as not just an enhancement of resources but as a symbol of a deep-rooted commitment to advancing emergency medical services. He expressed his gratitude towards the YCCS for their generous contribution, emphasising the importance of such collaborative efforts for the betterment of the Virgin Gorda community and beyond.

Dr Samuel outlined the strategic placement of one of the ambulances on Virgin Gorda, complementing the existing ambulance at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic and adding a layer of redundancy to the island’s emergency response system.

She also shed light on the ongoing development of the emergency services, mentioning the anticipated graduation of a new cohort of EMTs and plans for expanding the emergency response team to other islands within the territory.
