BVI’s first local Police Commissioner Vernon Malone passes away
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is in mourning following the death of its first local Commissioner of Police, Vernon Malone, who passed away recently at the age of 76.
Malone, who dedicated a large portion of his life to law enforcement, passed away on Saturday, May 4 at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital.
Malone began his career as a constable in 1970. He steadily rose through the ranks, making history in 1991 when he became the first local Commissioner of Police for the RVIPF.
Malone was highly regarded for his leadership and transformative contributions to the force. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in modernising the service, enhancing training and professional development, and strengthening community policing initiatives. His efforts significantly improved security across the BVI, the RVIPF said.
Throughout his tenure, Malone was instrumental in enhancing the capabilities and welfare of the RVIPF. He established several units such as the Family and Juvenile Unit, the Major Crime Team, and enhanced the Marine Branch and Immediate Response Unit. His commitment to education was also evident as he fostered opportunities for officers to pursue higher education, significantly uplifting the force’s professional standards.
After retiring from the police force, Malone continued his public service as an elected member of the House of Assembly from 2007 until 2011.
The RVIPF extended condolences to his family, the fraternity of law enforcement, the legal profession, and his friends.
