BVI’s very own environmental Atlas now ready for distribution

Labour & Immigration Minister, Vincent Wheatley.

The government has announced that the newly-published BVI Environmental Atlas is now available for distribution, meaning students will now have the chance to learn about the territory’s geography from an atlas produced here.

The new atlas is expected to bring greater awareness of the territory’s natural landscape and biodiversity.

Speaking in a recent sitting of the House of Assembly, Natural Resources Minister Vincent Wheatley said the new Environment Atlas is anticipated to become a critical resource for teachers and students throughout the Territory.

“Up until this point, the teaching of geography and the environment in BVI Schools has relied upon the use of regional and international Atlases,” Wheatley explained.

He said the National Parks Trust will be distributing the first copies to schools very shortly and is working to make copies available for sale to the general public.

The Atlas was the brainchild of Bertrand Lettsome and its development began in 2002 through an initial grant from the UK Overseas Territories Environment Programme.

The National Parks Trust received a second injection of funding from the Governor’s Office in 2020 to get the publication done. The BVI now has its own and can share with the world its unique features.

The Parks Trust collaborated with 39 local, regional and international experts to create this very valuable resource.
