Cabinet receives situation report from last October’s TS Philippe

Nearly six months after the passage of Tropical Storm Philippe, which impacted the Virgin Islands in early October last year, Cabinet has just been given situation reports from that weather incident.

A situation report is a document or summary that provides an overview of a particular emergency event to provide key stakeholders with essential information about the current status, progress, challenges, and any other relevant details related to the subject of interest.

A decision document from Cabinet’s March 13 meeting said the executive body “received the situation reports prepared by the Department of Disaster Management, and the Public Works Department … and noted actions taken during and after the passage of the Tropical Storm Philippe”.

Philippe caused significant flooding to homes and businesses around Tortola and also caused some infrastructural damage to some of the territory’s roadways.

However, reports suggest that the sister islands were spared much of the flooding and debris that impacted Tortola.

There were also multiple reports of homes being flooded and about walls that had fallen.

The government received US$552,297 from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) to assist in recovery efforts. The payout was made under the facility’s excess rainfall policy and is the first since the Territory joined CCRIF in 2018.

is too long for a damage report. How about submitting the report a week after the storm so the money has not already be wasted on useless concerts, no bid contracts, miscellaneous expenses, fictitious estimates, etc.
