Calypso competition to return for August Festival
Dirk Walters, the Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIFFC), stated that the calypso competition will return at this year’s August Festival after being absent for a while.
“I am pleased to announce that… one of the committees that is back in gear right now is the Calypso competition committee and we will be having a Calypso competition for the seventieth [anniversary] for Festival at this year’s Emancipation celebration,” Walters said recently.
He urged Calypsonians to get themselves together to be ready to participate in this year’s event. “We had a couple of years break so we hope everyone has several songs waiting and ready and it’s going to be the biggest one ever this year,” Walters added.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley jokingly commented that he would enter the competition with a submission about the controversial Mika Barry Facebook page.
In 2019, the competition saw Reynold Phillip, known as King Paido, clinching the Calypso crown at the Prime Time Festiville in Road Town with his songs “Bring Your Culture On” and “The Letter (Wa ya answer fa)”. King Paido not only captured the audience’s attention but also secured awards for Best Social Commentary, Best Stage Performance, and Best Lyrics.
Sistah Joyce was the first runner-up with her song “Hold On,” which encouraged resilience in the face of challenges, and Lady Liberty provided comedic relief with her performance “Speaker Wig,” taking the second runner-up spot.
