Climate change advocacy not helping us

Cindy Rosan-Jones

Amid Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley’s constant calls for climate action from bigger countries, political commentator Cindy Rosan has posited that the territory isn’t benefiting from the government’s advocacy, which requires them to take frequent international trips to attend conferences.

The Premier is currently representing the BVI at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. Speaking recently on the Morning Braff radio show, Rosan said the BVI has not reaped the benefits of any funds or positive actions that resulted from these frequent visits to climate change events.

“They say when they go to these conferences it’s to secure funding for us. When they get this funding, what is the plan — to use it towards climate change here? We don’t even enforce our littering law or garbage laws. You have people throwing stuff in the sea and we’re not doing anything. You’re all the way across the sea looking for money to do what?” Rosan questioned.

She added: “What’s the plan that they present to those organisations that they go and ask for money? No wonder they don’t take us seriously.”

Residents have been voicing their complaints about the frequent travelling being done by government members as the country continues to grapple with urgent issues that persist due to lack of funding.

But Premier Wheatley commented that the COP28 climate meeting presents an excellent opportunity to advocate in an international forum for the needs of developing states.

He added: “We will also promote the Virgin Islands’ readiness to receive funding and investment due to our advanced legislative framework, our Climate Change Trust Fund, and a bevy of costed approved projects.”

The Premier’s delegation includes Health Minister Vincent Wheatley; Climate Change officer in the Ministry of Natural Resources & Climate Change, Angela Burnett-Penn; and Acting United Kingdom/European Union Representative, Tracy Bradshaw.

Cindy good on this one. Ministers always looking for money to go in their pockets. Money never gets spent on what the VI need. Regular gut cleaning, bush cutting, road cleaning, road repair. Looking after the resources we have. Look around you the island is littered with trucks and garbage. Derelict open land all around. Prospect reef. Nothing is maintained, nothing broken is removed. Electric boxes open to people and children. Litter, litter, litter. Diesel burning with no solar or altrnative energy plan. As an island station we should be world leaders in the environment not looking for handouts. Attending to and enforcing the policies we have in place as Cindy said would be a good start. Not pretending we are some environmental heaven being damaged by outside forces. The damage is being done by people here and the lack of Government coordinated and consistent intervention. Did anyone mention Pockwoood Pond, VG dump, Coxheath contamination zone.

The pollution that results from the air mileage clocked up by those attending conferences on climate change is a significant cause of climate change.

Although these elites are indeed brazenly two-faced, their fondness for private jests has nothing whatsoever to do with the changing climate of the globe. Air pollution? Yes indeed, humans can have detrimental impacts on local environments with pollution and “development”. But that has nothing to do with optimum global temperatures, which by the way, is still a mystery. Nobody knows what the optimum global temperature should be for life to thrive on this planet, it could well be that 2 degrees warmer will result in an explosion of vegetation and a boost to global food production.

I would be willing to bet a dollar that you have absolutely no idea what “CO2 fertilization” is or how it benefits out planet.

The rich is monetizing the environmental crisis by paying off corrupt politicians so they can continue destruction of the environment in a benign atmosphere it’s not been done. And all the world leaders should have employed video conferencing meeting instead of the large carbon trail into the atmosphere created by flying to Dubai, I know they are anxious to indulge in the luxury of that place and all politicians of the Caribbean born in poverty would be glad to go on that sight seeing, because Caribbean politicians have zero contribution to make but been infantillised, as little children they are given instructions to sign documents they have no understand if, then they are fed lavishly and pose in photos with real world leaders as historic photo collection for their ego. The Caribbean has no say whatsoever but to go and make white people narrative of us that we can’t manage anything a realization. They still in their racist concept we are uncivilized.

Why does this news blog report every utterance of G-Cans as if it is newsworthy.
I can’t think of anything relevant that she has ever said or done.
Did she hand over the money she raised for Damian or did she keep some or all of it for herself?

      • @ A R says:

You seem to be implying something. Instead of being an internet gangsta go tell the police what you “seemingly” know. If it’s not fact, then stop fanning a flame. Every life lost senselessly deserves justice as they are someone’s loved one, but while you there seeking justice for eddo, seek the justice for all he whose lives he had a hand in their demise.

  5. Bam, take dat says:

What funding MAY be available at an environmental conference would be earmarked for environmental issues. Only in BVI would they collect this money and use it for everything other than the environment. May be on panties and planes, I don’t know

Between Slow Wande, Luarna in the Corner and the other members of the A** Clown Brigade this money already spent

With the incinerator, those fires, all them speed boats, and all the old trucks and cars; the BVI is a bigger polluter per head of population than most western nations including the UK.

  8. Enforcement is Key says:

Cindy is very incorrect in her assertions here. Currently the climate framework global decisions that were made at The 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) has ended with an historic deal to create a new fund, in which countries responsible for high carbon emissions will compensate vulnerable countries suffering from climate impacts. The BVI
