Collection bin set up for donations to embattled former Premier
Ahead of Andrew Fahie’s trial in the United States, residents are being invited to offer a financial contribution to the embattled former Premier of the British Virgin Islands.
Fahie was arrested in 2022 for conspiracy to traffic cocaine from the BVI to the United States.
A large receptacle has been placed inside the One Stop Mall in Road Town where individuals interested in making donations can do so. It will be at the mall from October 16 to November 16, 2023.
Prominent businesswoman Patsy Lake, who is the owner of One Stop Mall, described the funds donated to the now disgraced former premier as a “love offering.”
“Family and friends have been urging me to allow a receptacle to be placed in One Stop Mall as a central point where people can come and show love in the form of financial support, and I have agreed to allow this to happen,” Lake explained. “We don’t turn down our families, and I’m not here to be a judge of whether Andrew is right or wrong. That’s up to the court and God.
People may also write cheques for Fahie, payable to Albion ‘Bobby’ Hodge, as Lake mentioned.
Fahie is charged with one count of conspiracy to import a controlled substance, conspiracy to engage in money laundering, and attempted money laundering. Additionally, there is a subsequent charge of Interstate and Foreign Travel in Aid of Racketeering that was added in early November last year.
His jury trial is scheduled to take place before the Miami Division Court on January 8, 2024, at 9 am.
Fahie’s two co-accused — former BVI Ports Authority boss Oleanvine Maynard and her son Kadeem Maynard — both pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to import cocaine and pledged full cooperation with prosecutors in exchange for leniency from the court at sentencing.
As part of Oleanvine’s plea bargain, US prosecutors agreed to drop four other counts, including money laundering and racketeering. For Kadeem’s cooperation in the plea agreement, prosecutors determined that he was a “minor participant” in the criminal activity and should therefore receive a two-level reduction at sentencing.
Both Maynards face a mandatory minimum term of 10 years imprisonment unless either defendant is ‘safety valve eligible’. A “safety valve” is an exception to mandatory minimum sentencing laws, allowing a judge to sentence a person below the mandatory minimum term if certain conditions are met.
