College offers tourism courses for unemployed residents

The H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) will be introducing short courses to support the local tourism industry.

HLSCC President Janet Smith said the college will be offering courses in bartending, customer service, yacht crewing, and waitressing.

Smith was addressing the 2018 Standing Finance Committee at the time.

According to the report on the Committee’s deliberations, implementing the aforementioned courses is in response to the number of persons who are either unemployed or underemployed in the territory.

“Another reason is to also recruit because they (the college) really believe that they need to increase the workforce enrolment,” the report said.

Smith did not disclose the cost of the courses during her presentation to the Standing Finance Committee. However, she said the courses are “priced in a way that would allow persons who would have not otherwise considered [it], to attend the college”.

The tourism-related programme is expected to begin around June 2018.

Since the hurricanes, HLSCC has successfully implemented recovery courses to support the marine industry and the construction industry.

According to college records, more than 300 persons enrolled in the free construction programme.

However, the college reported that enrolment was low for the marine programme because of the cost associated with those courses.

The marine programme costs a minimum of $150 per course and there are roughly five courses.
