Community must do more to fight crime

Deputy Governor David Archer, Jr.

Deputy Governor David Archer Jr is the latest public figure to urge residents to play a more active role in stemming the rise in crime in the territory.

In a national address, Archer told residents to “step up today, stomp crime out, and secure the BVI’s tomorrow.” Archer said the crime-fighting agencies need the help of residents who have a duty to respond by uniting to report crimes that happen in their communities.

“Your involvement can range from reporting suspicions activities to joining neighbourhood watch groups. The first step to curbing this issue is recognising the need to step up to it,” Archer said.

He continued: “Our ultimate goal is to secure a brighter, safer future for the Virgin Islands. The very fabric of our society can only stand the test of time if we put our hearts and minds to securing our future.”

He also urged churches and non-governmental groups to unite, have dialogue, and take a stand against crime and violence in the society.

Archer’s call comes as the community continues to grapple with a sharp uptick in criminal activities. The murder rate remains below 10 so far this year, but due to feuding gangs and activities linked to the illicit drug trade, residents fear the number can increase.

The police continue to urge residents to eradicate their culture of silence, saying that people have vital information about every murder that is committed in the territory, but refuse to share what they know with law enforcers.

Still, some residents say they don’t feel safe enough to share their information with local cops as they fear their details will be leaked to others and endanger their lives and lives of their loved ones.

Offer rewards for information leading to arrests then there wouldn’t be such a hard time with this. Nobody risking themselves for a “thanks”.

Crime continues to wreak havoc on the community and families. House of Assembly needs to do their part by stiffening gun laws and penalties. The vetting process for processing trade licenses, contracts, work permit and job applications need to be across the board and not just for some.

  7. Reality Check says:

The populace will not become law-abiding until the Police start enforcing all of the laws. Generations have grown up watching everyone around them disregard the traffic laws, running stop signs, parking blocking traffice, etc., so how can we expect anyone to obay any laws!
Every officer should be issued citation books and told to write a ticket EVERYTIME they see an infraction. I watch police stopped waiting for traffic to work around vehicles parked illegally yet never see the offending vehicle ticketed.
Don’t enforce laws, don’t expect anyone to obay them!!

Have anyone heard of any Crime Riddened Country that is now Crime free? When Crime creeps in, It’s here to stay. The BVI is no different. Crime will only decrease when Parents give up their Children which will NEVER happen. When Politicians give up their Friends Which will NEVER happen. When Police Officers are Well Vetted before employed or are identified when caught. When Prison Officers are Honest and Loyal. When Bishops and Leaders in the various Churches come clean Which will NEVER happen.
So let the talk continue. Crime aint going NO WHERE.
Have you ever pondered where a young Man or Woman who never worked in their Life, Parents not rich but still live Lives like Kings and Queens? Do you ever noticed how some Christian Businesses are thriving while others can’t? You think it’s Prayers? Think again….Wherever there is Corruption There is Crime.
