Cox Heath fire update from Deputy Governor
PRESS RELEASE: As of Friday, May 11, 2018, the fire at Cox Heath continues to be contained which means that the threat of the fire spreading has been eliminated at this time. Additional equipment to pump 1000 gallons of seawater per minute directly to the site to completely extinguish the core of the fire is being deployed.
The community should remain vigilant with regards to the danger posed by smoke in the area. Only authorised personnel are permitted on the site and persons assigned to work in the area are required to wear protective respiratory aid.
If you reside in an area impacted by the smoke, it is advised that you limit outdoor activities to avoid unnecessary exposure. If you are experiencing any respiratory issues please contact your physician or Peebles Hospital at 852 7500.
As a precautionary measure, commencing Saturday, 12 May 2018, Community Nurses and Environmental Health Officers will be visiting the homes of persons in the Cox Heath, Pockwood Pond, West End, Capoon’s Bay and surrounding areas to assess the level of impact and to render medical assistance and/or advice.
We thank the public for your cooperation as we work together to address this emergency situation.

Where is your update and statement today May, 14, 2018.. The one from May 11, 2018 is stale and incorrect.
The smoke is still belching. I called the 852 7200 # on Saturday, hoping for assistance. I was put on hold 3 times before speaking with the ER Nurse. Who promptly told me to go to the drug store and get a mask. I asked if masks were being donated, thinking I may pick up some for my community. Of course NOT. And was referred to Vanterpool and Medicure to buy some! Was told to go to the local clinic on Monday! Yea, thanks a lot. Please Governor’s office deal with this HEALTH HAZARD post haste. People West are suffering.
Ridiculuos, why put families in that expense. Life in these islands is hard enough as it is. What about large families who cant afford the extra at a time like this. Very uncaring. Government should be the one to PROVIDE these masks to the public, especially children, the elderly and those brought in for respiratory issues related to this mess!!! Poor management again!!!!
Can the NEOC give daily updates on status and health risks. People are moving out of West End if they can but most can’t. This is very serious.
