Cruise pier being renamed tomorrow

A ship docked at the cruise pier in Road Town.

Minister responsible for ports Mark Vanterpool has followed through on his promise to rename the Tortola Cruise Pier in honour of former Chief Minister, Cyril Romney.

Come Friday, February 15, the pier will be officially referred to as the Cyril B Romney Tortola Cruise Pier.

In a statement to announce the impending name chage, Vanterpool described the former chief minister as the pioneer of cruise tourism in the BVI.

“I am pleased to be a part of the Honourable Dr D Orlando Smith government to bestow this honour alongside the BVI Ports Authority,” he said.

This renaming is among a list of last-minute initiatives the National Democratic Party (NDP) government has introduced before they contest the next general elections.

Just last month, the said NDP government successfully passed a motion in the House of Assembly to rename the state-owned Peebles Hospital in honour of Premier Smith who is retiring from representational politics.

Good move, but you are the Chief C@@k€¥ T#!€F. So, you need to exit the stage, if not gracefully, by force come January 25th.

Perfect —- to use for a questionable and corrupt pier park project! I guess there is honour amongst thieves after all. 😉

Wish there was the same urgency in fixing the roads properly for a longer life span. Did this name change go to HOA for approval or the MCW is making a unilateral decision? Was the HOA dissolved? What other facilities will have a name change before the 2/25?

The rules must be changed so that once an election date is set the encumbent government role will be to take care of routine operations and emergencies. Fix date for election is needed as the UK has. UK election is due the first Thursday in May every 5 years. And under a fix date in the VI, non-emergency major projects should require approval of at least 80% of HOA voting yes 90 days b4 an election.

Cyril B. Romney, former Chief Minister, named being affixed to the TPP is deserving. It is the 11th hour rushed job that is interesting. Are all the last minute rush jobs for things that could have easily been done within the last 7.75 years that makes people shake their heads. It creates the impression that NDP has major doubts about its reelection. An issue is being politicized that should not be. Cyril deserves better.

I agree with you but to make it seem like the Government did nothing for the past 7 plus years is a stretch. Could more have been done? Absolutely! But they have done some good things in the Territory.

Even if there was an inkling chance that the ‘DP would have gotten a vote, after this move, for me, its preety much over for this group!

Public Icons will come and go so why not put up a statue, with a plaque describing the man and his contributions? Its pleasing for visitors and we can build a stock of historical monuments over history. Namings building is not informative. Was there any public discssion
