Various members of the community showcased local foods and products at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park on Friday, August 2, in what was another successful staging of the BVI Cultural Food Fair, held as part of the annual emancipation festivities.

The fair was alive with the sounds of steel pans and local music, creating a vibrant atmosphere as vendors displayed an array of foods and handcrafted items.

A longstanding cultural debate in the BVI has been about which local tarts have the best flavours—coconut, guava, or pineapple. One particular vendor at the food fair stood out by offering a wider variety of mini tarts, including unique flavours like soursop and gooseberry.

Another vendor featured an assortment of candies, including peppermint treats and the beloved fudge flavours of coconut and vanilla. In addition to local broths, soups, and the famous BVI dish of fish and fungi, there were also an array of local drinks on display.

True to BVI tradition, vendors also showcased local soaps with various fragrances, crafted by a specific artisan.
One vendor shared her passion for baking and her love for culture, which inspired her participation in the food fair.

Meanwhile, Ethaen’s Farm, named after the owner’s son, offered food lovers a blend of local drinks, fudges, peppermint candies, and other products, promoting healthy eating and locally grown produce within the community.

The annual emancipation festivities feature a multitude of activities, with the Cultural Food Fair being one of the highlights. The fair continues into its second day on Saturday, August 3, at the Pier Park.

This year marks not only the 70th anniversary of the BVI’s emancipation but also the 190th anniversary since the abolition of slavery.

They just multicoloured umbrellas. Nothing political. Just because one group of people say they mean something to them, doesn’t mean everyone else has to stop using them to express joy and fun and just because they look pretty.

Depending on who has adopted using it and the resulting new meaning and connotation..it could become becomes tainted offensive and no longer appropriate for the original user and intended purpose.

Lobster and conch out of season yet people still serving it. Isn’t that against the law?

  6. Redstorm says:

This should happen four times per year. The food list and price should be given in advance, publish it on social media, take orders online,or whatever communication media you will use, but let the people know you through the food and drinks.

Cultural food bring people together and create a beautiful atmosphere.

Self control is paramount in all matters.Too much of anything is not a good thing.
It is not the food that is bad it is the glutony. You know your limit…all some or none
Self control is paramount in any and all things. Excercise for healthy. Rolling out of bed into your car and out your car on the couch is a destination into a casket prematurely.
