Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews said no curfew could have prevented what he described as the horrifying murder of a 11-year-old girl and a man on Tortola last night.
“These killers were clearly intent upon their crime irrelevant of the time of day. The curfew remains an effective tool in reducing the number of persons out and about during this vulnerable time for the territory and giving a level of reassurance to the community.”
“However, no curfew – no matter what hours – will prevent someone who has the evil intent to kill from carrying out such a heinous crime,” Matthews said a brief interview with BVI News this morning.
The police commissioner told our news centre that there were more than one scooters involved in last night’s ride-by shooting on the West End Public Road in the area of a graveyard.
He also confirmed that the 11-year-old was travelling with an adult male and female around minutes to 10pm last night when the gunmen appeared. The child was in the back passenger seat of the vehicle.
“The offenders were on two scooters and one fired several shots indiscriminately into the vehicle.”
The man and child were pronounced dead on arrival at Peebles Hospital. The woman is still receiving treatment at the said medical facility.
“I am sickened, saddened, and horrified that a double killing has taken place in our community… The perpetrators of such a crime are sick individuals and, in this case, have taken the life of an innocent child.”
“I appeal to all of our communities, including those who are of a criminal nature, to have a conscience and to come forward and assist the police with any information that will bring these evil killers to justice,” the top cop said.
Matthews said the RVIPF will not be releasing details on the deceased as yet.
He, however, said police will provide descriptions of possible offenders at a later stage.
Wednesday night’s double homicide brings the territory’s murder tally to 10 since the start of the year. The BVI has never had this many murders in nearly a decade.
