DDM introduces new emergency app with enhanced features

THE BVIDDM Emergency mobile application.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has announced the launch of a new mobile app which it explained is designed to assist residents in preparing for and surviving emergency situations in the territory.

The new app – BVIDDM Emergency – is available on both the Google Play Store as well as the App Store for iPhone users to download. The app replaces the DDM Alert app that was launched in 2018.

Information & Education Manager at the DDM, Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel, said the app gives live alerts for storm watches and warnings as well as other hazards that may occur.

“Now there’s so many more things that the phones can do, so many more bells and whistles that we’re able to integrate. So, we’re excited about the new app,” Kanyuck-Abel said.

For persons that may want to avoid the DDM’s website when seeking information, they can access details about news updates, emergency updates, and weather forecasts.

Persons can also find information about emergency preparation, nearby shelter locations and tips and tricks for persons to become hurricane-ready.

Because the app has a location-based feature, it also allows people to give their position in the event of an emergency so that supplies can be delivered to them or for them be able to get assistance if needed.

Kanyuck-Abel said the app also integrates with social media accounts so persons can exchange messages through those channels as well.

She further explained that the app is focused largely on delivering safety information and has moved away from issuing multiple daily updates on forecasts as the previous app had done.

  1. another app again? says:

I wonder if it would help if i put the potholes on this site because i put pictures on the other site and up to yet nothing has been done

  2. Ok says:

Now THIS deserves an app. Not the bleeding potholes that are right in your face. The Government seriously need a app to report potholes? Clowns.

  3. Not cutting it says:

Cutting and pasting other international reports of local weather and geological events “ we got hit by a tsunami yesterday “ doesn’t seem a very good use of public funds why not just advertise where to look for the best relevant info rather than creating pointless jobs with second hand and late information. Promote public awareness of risk and preparedness don’t ? look outside and tell us it’s raining.

  4. Disaster management says:

Sea cows bay emergency shelter recently renovated , if your own house isn’t safe come gather at sea level ,sat on a dock waiting to be hit by hurricane surge or tsunami, now that’s what you call disaster management .

  5. Popo says:

“ For persons that may want to avoid the DDM’s website ”
Why would anyone want to avoid a website?
I can understand someone wanting to avoid having an
app on their phone but simply looking on a website??!
What a strange statement for them to make.
