de Castro hailed as a champion for education

With a decrease in the budgetary allocation for education in 2024, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has hailed Education Minister Sharie de Castro, saying she is a champion for education as well as teachers and students.

“We have a Minister for Education — who even though small in stature — is big and powerful,” the Premier said at a recent ceremony which marked the reopening of the Jost Van Dyke Primary School. “If you get between the Minister of Education and her teachers and students, she will fight you,” the Premier said jokingly.

He said de Castro’s passion is what the territory needs, adding that “she knows her stuff and fights hard for the education system.”

After the Premier spoke, Labour Minister and Deputy Premier Lorna Smith concurred with the leader’s sentiments. Smith hailed de Castro as a strong advocate for education, saying “you don’t want to be near her when she is fighting for $4 million.”

Even as she is being hailed as a competent minister, de Castro has admitted that the territory’s investment in education needs to increase if the BVI wants to remain competitive and attract the best educators.

She said despite the constraints, her aim has been to get the teaching manipulatives and learning aids which teachers call for yearly.

de Castro is also known as a champion of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) in the education system. Under her leadership, the BVI had reintroduced two pathways that allow young people in high school and university to become teachers, filling the shortage of teachers that besets the education system.

I made sure to read the article before coming to the comments. I share the same sentiments as they do by wondering what is it that she has accomplished? I am not saying this to belittle her or anything but we have our bar of achievement set way too low. Her STEAM program hasn’t been around long enough to generate any data on its effectiveness. She is like a quarter back in football, she can throw all the greatest passes in the world, it doesn’t mean anything if it isn’t received. So her STEAM program is only as good as the people it is intended for and we all know the kind of children attending schools these days in majority are not being directed as they should be.
