Delays in CCTV network rollout, but system ‘never been better’

Police Commissioner Mark Collins has assured residents that CCTV camera systems across the territory are up and working and suggested that he has not gotten any reports indicating that the system is not functioning as it should.

“I’m not sure about any times where CCTV is not working,” Collins said in response to a question about reports of non-working public CCTV cameras when crimes are reported. “I mean, we have a good network of CCTV across the territory now and we’re in the final stages of that rollout.”

According to the top cop, there have been delays in the rollout of the CCTV network because of fibre optic lines that need to be laid and this has caused the process to take longer than expected.

However, he noted that in addition to the public network of CCTV cameras, there are also private and business CCTV cameras that can be used by officers. This is also supplemented by the recently implemented feature of body-worn cameras by RVIPF officers.

“So, the ability and the availability of evidence through CCTV and body-worn cameras has never been better,” he stated.

He added: “Of course, there will be times where an incident occurs where the cameras are facing the other way or you know, sometimes the network is down and things like that. I get that, but I’m not getting many, many reports to say that CCTV is not working, if I’m honest.”

Earlier this year, Premier Natalio Wheatley concluded that there was a need for more cameras across the territory, but said he was comfortable with the placement of the current CCTV network system.

“The police know where they are and they’ve placed them in strategic positions so that they can get any information that they might need in an investigation,” the Premier stated at the time.

Governor John Rankin, in the meantime, said police will use all available tools at their disposal in investigating and tackling crime. However, he called for wider community involvement in tackling the territory’s current crime problem.

When the system never functions adequately, or not at all, how is it you can say it has “never been better”? It seems to be a standard in the BVI where when something is barely working or has never worked, it has therefore never worked better!

And all you ‘leaders’ (elected, unelected, or appointed) are wondering why there is seemingly a groundswell of discontent amongst the people you claim to represent! That’s because we the people are all sick and tired of your deceptive sugar-coated lip service!

Big Brother is watching and recording!
