Dengue alert! Disease flares up in Caribbean
Residents are being put on alert of a dengue flare-up in the Caribbean region.
The Environmental Health Division of the Ministry of Health issued the warning on Thursday, stating that it is now “assessing its Mosquito Control Programme” and increasing its mosquito disease-prevention campaign with property inspections and various other control measures.
The division, which will also be heightening public education and awareness, is now advising residents to take precautions to limit the chance of contracting dengue.
“The division respectfully requests that persons take all necessary measures to protect themselves and engage in source reduction by eliminating all breeding places by covering water containers, removing all solid waste from their premises, and reporting blocked drains,” Chief Environmental Health Officer, Lionel Michael said.
Using mosquito nets and window screens, wearing long clothing and using mosquito repellant are also preventative measures that are advised.
Dengue is a virus mainly transmitted by the female Aedes aegypti mosquito and, to a lesser extent, the Aedes albopictus.
Below are four preventative practises the Environmental Health Division advise:
- Search and destroy mosquito breeding places
- Self-protection: wearing long sleeve clothing
- Seek early consultation if experiencing signs and symptoms of Dengue
- Support fogging/spraying in hotspots and other control measures
