Diabetes Association to host screening at RiteWay

The Diabetes Association in the BVI is actively engaging the community through events, screenings, and educational outreach.

Throughout November, it has planned several key events focusing on diabetes awareness and designed to encourage healthier lifestyles and support those affected by the condition.

On Wednesday, free diabetes screenings will be available at RiteWay in Pasea, allowing residents to check their blood sugar levels and discuss diabetes management. This will be followed by Saturday’s annual Elton Georges’ Run/Walk event. President of the BVI Diabetes Association, Dr Sharlon Lewis, highlighted the importance of community involvement.

“We have the screening coming up [tomorrow], Wednesday… we’re trying to get persons signed up for the Elton Georges’ Run Walk on Saturday. And even for something like that, you don’t have to know how to do a blood pressure reading or a blood sugar reading. You just have to be interested,” she said.

She encouraged people to register and talk to someone. Lewis explained that these activities raise awareness and promote physical fitness and well-being.

The association’s walk will start at the Sir Olva Georges Plaza at 5:30 am, covering a six-mile route to Ebenezer Thomas Primary School in Sea Cow’s Bay and back. Organisers have arranged multiple checkpoints, allowing participants to choose shorter routes if needed. The event will conclude with a free breakfast for attendees, creating an opportunity for the community to unite.

To address the ongoing health challenges, the Diabetes Association has expanded its educational outreach. The association provides vital health information, including dietary tips for managing blood sugar levels, and encourages simple lifestyle adjustments.

Dr Lee, an eye specialist with over 30 years of experience in diabetic eye care, is collaborating with the association to offer free eye screenings. This is crucial because diabetic retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes, can lead to vision loss if left untreated. With modern retinal imaging technology, Dr Lee can detect eye issues early, allowing timely interventions.

The association also plans to host a Human Circle of Solidarity at the Sir Olva Georges Plaza on Thursday 14 November, World Diabetes Day. Participants are encouraged to wear royal blue to show support, and an aerial photo will be taken and shared internationally to raise awareness.

For those who wish to contribute, the Diabetes Association welcomes volunteers to help with events and educational outreach.
