Dominican trucker fined for cannabis
A Dominican man was fined more than $900 after cannabis was found in his possession on June 19 last year.
Charged with possession 24 grams of cannabis is 21-year-old Bradley Bell of an undisclosed local address.
The trucker entered a guilty plea when he appeared before Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo recently.
Leading up to his sentence, the magistrate had said: “I do not believe a custodial sentence is warranted.”
The court said it considered his young age, his remorse, his good character, and his early guilty plea as mitigating factors when determining his sentence.
Magistrate DaBreo then fined the young offender $950 to be paid by December 23.
If he fails to pay the fine, he will spend two months at Her Majesty’s Prison.
I am sorry
Addressing the court, Bell had said: “I am sorry, it won’t happen again.”
What the court heard happened
The court heard that on the day in question, Bell along with his friends was caught by police with the controlled drug at Long Bay, Beef Island.
They were subsequently charged. But after accepting responsibility for the drugs, the Crown offered no evidence against the others. The charges against them were subsequently dismissed.
