Dorian floods RT Police Station | Cops patrol in height of storm, make minor arrests

Road Town Police Station

The Road Town Police Station on Tortola has suffered the adverse effects of yet another natural disaster — Hurricane Dorian — which hit the territory on Wednesday, August 28.

Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews, however, said his officers were still able to perform their duty, despite the unforeseen circumstances.

“The Road Town station suffered flooding; making life challenging and uncomfortable but officers stuck to the task in hand and overall the planning and execution of our response was successful,” said Matthews, who did not specify the extent of the flooding.

“Officers were deployed to key strategic locations and many remained actually out on patrol during the height of the storm to ensure crimes were prevented by the few who might seek to take advantage,” the commissioner said in an interview with BVI News.

Arrests

The top cop also said an unspecified number of persons were arrested during the curfew period that was enforced as the storm passed south of the territory.

He, however, assured that none of the offences was of a serious nature.

“The Force policed the curfew and brought in additional resources overnight; making some arrests and cautioning those individuals. There were no serious crimes reported and I am pleased to advise my officers remained safe throughout.” Matthews said.

The commissioner attributed the police force’s overall success to the lessons they learnt from the September 2017 hurricanes.

Those disasters devastated the territory and wrought considerable damage on Road Town Police Station and all other places of operation of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

Seems like a lot of the Government buildings were flooded…no matter where they were. Is that a sign or a message?
