Drunken man jailed for slashing stepdaughter, assaulting wife

Eswort Barnwell has been sentenced to just over 17 years in prison after slashing his stepdaughter across the face and repeatedly striking his wife with a machete during a violent drunken episode at their Diamond Estate home in Tortola.

The incident occurred on September 19, 2022, following a family barbecue where Barnwell consumed half a bottle of vodka. Tensions flared after a disagreement with his wife over her phone conversation with her boss.

Barnwell initially became aggressive and punched his stepdaughter in the head. He then turned on his wife, knocking her to the ground. After assaulting both women, Barnwell left the house, saying that he was going to the police station. Later, he returned to the home armed with a machete and attacked both women.

According to the sentencing judgment, Barnwell struck his wife with the machete a few times on her upper body, using the flat of the machete. The court heard that children under the age of 12 witnessed the attack and were left traumatised.

Barnwell eventually cornered his stepdaughter in her bedroom. She begged him not to kill her.

“I would tell her I am very sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight at the time,” he stated during his testimony.

His stepdaughter described the ordeal in a victim impact statement: “My recovery has been long, hard and tiresome and is still ongoing… my scars are a constant reminder of the night I wish I could forget.”

Barnwell was sentenced to 17 years, 1 month and 1 day for causing grievous bodily harm to his stepdaughter. His sentence was reduced due to mitigating factors and credit for his guilty plea and time on remand. He will also serve 3.28 years (three years, three months and 13 days) for assaulting his wife. The sentences will run concurrently.

In her judgment, High Court Judge Angelica Teelucksingh pointed to the need for deterrence, noting that “men do not have an unfettered licence to batter women.” She ruled that Barnwell must enrol in rehabilitation and training programmes while incarcerated.

Please put harsh penalities and pit bull teeth in current Domestic Violence legislation, fire arms deaths and possession.

If you beat upon a woman, you must know that such sociological mis-conduct will not be tolerated.

You will spend a hefty and significant amount of time from around women.

You cshould not be allowed to beat them and still enjoy them.
