Egg prices slashed as RiteWay unveils ‘Oh so Good’ eggs

Egg prices in the BVI have been cut in half following the launch of the new ‘Oh So Good’ brand of cage-free eggs at RiteWay supermarkets.

The announcement came during a press conference this week, attended by Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, RiteWay General Manager Neil Hayes, and Supply Manager Neil Thomas.

“We’re celebrating the fact that we’ve halved the price of eggs through some great supply work, finding some eggs from a new egg supplier in the Dominican Republic,” Hayes explained.

He added, “I’m very excited that we’re lowering the price of eggs for the consumers after what has been a very difficult 18 months with egg pricing being so high.”

The new pricing offers a dozen eggs for $5 and a 30-pack for $11.99. The supply deal with producers in the Dominican Republic is part of RiteWay’s move toward private-label products under the ‘Oh So Good’ brand, which the company said allows it to offer better value to consumers.

Premier Wheatley welcomed the development, noting that eggs had become unaffordable for many households.

“Eggs are so symbolic of what’s happening because the price of eggs became unaffordable for the average resident. There was an outcry,” the Premier stated. He said the move was “a win-win,” highlighting that the eggs are “fresher, hormone-free, and of course, it increases intra-Caribbean trade, which is great for the BVI, it’s great for the Dominican Republic.”

According to Hayes, customers have already responded positively.

“The initial feedback from customers has been amazing. I saw people stopping in the aisle and saying, oh, I can buy eggs again, because the price has literally been halved,” he explained.

He also stressed that the eggs meet international standards.

“We did a full audit on their facilities and checked their accreditations. These are not Mickey Mouse suppliers in the Dominican Republic. They’re very credible, they’ve got very high standards,” he said while adding that they also sell products to the US and Europe.

The cut in egg prices follows a government-led trade mission to the Dominican Republic earlier this year, which aimed to find ways to lower the cost of food imports. For months, residents had expressed frustration over soaring egg prices, which reached record highs due to supply chain pressures and tariffs from the United States.

The introduction of ‘Oh So Good’ eggs is expected to increase consumption again, after many households cut back when prices climbed. RiteWay confirmed it would continue to stock other egg brands, including local and organic options, to give shoppers choices.

Good Morning: The consumers should be concerned about the health of the eggs. The yolks look a bit too deep yellow. The marketing slogan can cost you your health. A thorough investigation in must be done by customers. Why in 2025 we are not jumping on board and to promote local eggs.

Food safety is an issue- we ought to grow and raise what we are feeding our families. It was a good idea but we are not killing ourselves with poor supermarket products.
