Electricity company hit by major malfunction
The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has revealed the cause behind the latest in a series of lengthy power outages that have been affecting homes and businesses across the territory.
The agency said there was a major malfunction at one of its interconnection switches at the Pockwood Pond power station yesterday, July 17.
It explained that at approximately 11 am, the power station lost a significant amount of generation and a number of areas were affected as a result.
Due to the malfunction at the station, the BVIEC said it would be doing load shedding until the problem is resolved.
Residents across the territory have been affected by continued and lengthy island-wide power outages because of various issues affecting the BVIEC.
Recently, the Corporation’s General Manager, Neil Smith, said some of the challenges plaguing the entity include troublesome seaweed and maintenance issues as well as something he described as a ‘legacy issue’.
Smith said while there are always various reasons the BVIEC may not reach the efficiencies that it needs to achieve, he felt the Corporation’s machines and other assets are in fairly good condition.
Smith also shared that there was a system-wide challenge affecting the entity that included the maintenance and repairs of pipes and pumps that are part of the system.
“There’s room for improvement, and there’s room for a lot of improvement but what I wouldn’t like to do is have a conversation outside of the Corporation on why or how they could’ve done better,” Smith said at the time.
The power company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused with the latest outage.

The old manager zero issues
New manager new problems
just saying
Kye is a failure…He begged the voters for a job that he cannot do…He is overrated, simply not up to the task.
@bottom line, well said, it could not have been said better. Every now and again you get a right thinking person
When in doudt or out of your league, throw money at the problem.
Where there is no money, borrow, beg and beg, bring in the best to better minds and fix the damn problem.
Bury egos and incompetent minds. They only make matters worst.
BVIEC been load shedding for last couple of years now. Nothing has changed but the number of households that need electricity from this old grid that has not been updated since Jesus was a little boy.
