ESHS classes to resume next week instead

Students at the newly renovated Elmore Stoutt High School in Lower Estate.

Face-to-face classes at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) are now expected to resume next Monday, October 9, instead of today, October 6, as was previously announced.

A brief release from the Ministry of Education noted that work will continue to be posted in Google Classroom for students to complete.

The ministry said the change in plan was partially to facilitate additional cleaning after the school suffered extensive flooding after the passage of Tropical Storm Phillipe earlier this week. The flooding left much mud and debris to be cleared in its aftermath.

“The reasons for the delayed resumption of in-person sessions are due to sustained saturation of the school grounds, and to allow the Ministry of Education to properly sanitise the affected classrooms and other rooms on campus, following the flood,” the release noted.

The slow-moving TS Phillipe dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on the territory on Tuesday, leaving many homes and businesses flooded and forcing the closure of most government offices and schools a day after its passage.

ESHS and Ivan Dawson Primary School were listed as the schools with delayed reopenings after the flooding, but the Ministry did not give any update on whether in-person classes will resume at Ivan Dawson Primary today.

Officials reported that the sister islands of Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada suffered minimal damage in the wake of the tropical storm and did not see as much flooding as Tortola.

The schools are not open and unresolved issues with the teachers but the Hon Minister and Acting CEO see it fit to be on a plane to Singapore for a Robotics competition. I would like to know what these persons see as their priorities. This NOMAD government who seem to want to be anywhere except where they are elected to serve…sigh

  3. Watch the game says:

The Minister gone Singapore to watch a competition flying first class, staying in the best hotel at the taxpayers expense while the school closed and people still affected from the flood. She has manipulated the government system and fooled a lot of people. Her boy toy got his belongers when he didn’t qualify. He got Covid money to pay off his credit card. Her mother got a set of money to spree including buying brakes for her car while she is employed as a consultant and still receiving her pension. Her sister get big money for her private school.
Would any sensible person believe that the Minister of Education had nothing to do with this?

Building a new school almost in a ghut what do you expect ?
We are talking about self governance
    We are talking about enslavement
    We are blaming UK
    We are blaming the Governor
    We are blaming expatriates
    We are blaming immigration policies
We are blaming past and present governments
We are blaming those who have the guts to speak out
Who is responsible for taking ACTIONS and enacting the changes we have to initiate?
    We have philosophy group chat
We expound on all the social ills, mismanagement of taxpayers money , what should be done
We test each other’s intelligence and professionalism to impress and see who is more verbose or who is smarter than who
    YET STILL NOTHING IS DONE
    NO ACTION is taken
    Why …,
Almost every frigging relative or some family member on some side benefits from the underhand corruption , of the day .
No one wants to offend an uncle, a nephew, a niece , an aunt, a grandparent , a cousin or an outsider marry into the family .
Politics in the BVI will continue to be the same and the UK will continue to hold the big stick .
Black and white and immigrant colonialism will continue to rule for decades

Inside the high school is reeking with the stench of backed up sewage, dampness and mold. If my child was going to that high school, him/her would not be going back untill the problems is fixed the right way. As a parent. I am making the Executive decision.

  12. Maybe says:

the new ESHS buildings will have to be torn down soon just like the old Aletha Scatliffe school was last summer.

  16. Time says:

Why is the minister in Singapore? What role is she expected to play? These ministers are just wasting tax payers monies.

  17. High school says:

I attended high school in the 80s and there were always campus buildings in the location od the new buildings. I can’t remember any of those buildings flooding except maybe what use to be the music room that had blocks with holes so the rain use to beat in. Other than that, I can’t remember actual classroom flooding to that extent. Make it make sense

  18. sister island visit says:

IMO the kids and the teachers should have been sent on field trip to VG and Jost and Anegada to learn explore and see while the school get cleaned up.

  19. Supermarket boy says:

He cover the glut to make parking. Garbage block water so it run over the concrete and any kind of rain the whole place flood. Not the school building fault.
