ESHS declared winners in Inter-Secondary School Debates
The Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) overcame St. Georges Secondary School to emerge victorious in the final round of the Education Ministry’s annual Inter-Secondary School debates.
The final round was held yesterday, March 13, under the moot, “All students exiting secondary school in the Virgin Islands should attain a technical qualification” and officials said the debate series showcased the analytical and public speaking prowess of students from across the territory.
The debates, which began on February 8, were fiercely contested, with ESHS and St Georges Secondary School reaching the finals after a series of intense rounds.
Participation in this year’s event was broad, with six schools including Bregado Flax Educational Centre – Secondary Division, Cedar International School, Ciboney Centre for Excellence, ESHS, St Georges Secondary School, and Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies, all vying for the top spot.
The final debate was closely fought, with the outcome hinging on the rebuttal scores, underscoring the high level of skill and preparation of the students. Ultimately, ESHS’s proposition team convincingly argued their case, leading to their win. In recognition of their achievement, prizes were awarded by the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, along with various sponsors who contributed to the success of the event.
The debates aimed to bolster students’ public speaking skills while encouraging them to consider diverse viewpoints, fostering tolerance and open-mindedness. Mrs Heida Selwood, Education Officer, emphasised the debates’ role in developing essential skills for students’ future success, both academically and in real-life situations.
With their victory, ESHS has earned the honour of representing the territory in the upcoming National Tourism Debates, poised to showcase their debating talent on a larger stage.
