ESHS won’t be ready for start of new school year in September

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said the Elmore Stoutt High School will not be ready for the original September completion as was planned.

The Premier sought to clarify his previous statement regarding the September deadline stating people have been ignoring the fact that he said there would be a slight delay, and everyone involved was pushing for late September instead of the beginning of September.

“Unfortunately, soon after that statement was made, the RDA received information that the windows and the doors were delayed. But the good news is that the windows and doors – at least some of them – have been received. I was very happy and relieved to hear that,” Dr Wheatley said.

“The contractors and the RDA are working assiduously to get the school open as quickly as possible. Obviously, it won’t be ready for the original date, but the Minister for Education today will give a very detailed update on where we are not only with Elmore Stoutt but with all the schools in the territory,” the Premier added.

Dr Wheatley also addressed the negative comments from members of the communities about the school.

“We tend to as a community sometimes seek to focus on the negative. On the Elmore Stoutt High School campus, we have not had a new building since Lavity Stoutt was alive. That L Adorothy Turnbull building – that was built when I was in high school. Nothing has been built since then. We have established I believe three buildings there that will help meet the needs of the students,” the Premier said.

“If it is late a month or a few weeks, certainly we can’t let that overshadow the fact that the students would have more accommodations and be able to shift from the Clarence Thomas building in Pasea. It is a warehouse. It is not designed to be a school. Certainly, that is progress, and I certainly will not let any person dampen my spirit for the progress that has been made on that project which is really record time,” he added.

I could have told you this. Even a blind person saw this. Said this the other day, it’s best to take time and build it properly and meet all the building codes and standard than to rush it and later have to pay millions to repair and in some case may have to demolish and rebuild.

On a serious note thou, it time for us to put aside our political differences and pay serious attention to our education and healthcare systems. When I said us I’m referring to our elected official and the citizens/resident of this country. We need to stop accepting lip service and mediocre performance. If they not up to it, remove them and give someone else a chance. We need to recognize that those who created these problems cannot fix it since the cannot accept they are wrong.

Remember a educated and healthy nation builds security, prosperity and a peaceful nation. Everyone benefits from this.

Any competent contractor knows that windows and doors have a lengthy time-line to being made and shipped so the whole “there was a slight delay” thing is rubbish because even if they were on time, they still wouldn’t constitute a complete building since you’ve no word on the furnishing inside, muchless the other electronic resources to teach properly.

Just like they will yell you that the “school” will be finished without ever mentioning that it’s only a shell, they will continue to misconstrue the truth hoping that you’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and give them passing marks.

Political ploys and talking points while playing with our children future.

This doors and windows delay excuse doesn’t really mean much to the common man on the street since none of us knew when they were scheduled to arrive anyway. None of us has seen the works programme schedule. The door and window installation on the programme schedule would have been based on the lead times supplied by the suppliers. So something ain’t right there.

Doors, windows and hardware are long lead items (always have been). Especially when hurricane rated glass is involved. Some companies also have strict order schedules and I doubt they will bump an order worth millions for one in the hundreds of thousands.

Lead times can sometimes be upwards of 4 to 6 months. For these to have arrived on time they would have had to be ordered before construction started or on day 1.

We are paying loads of money to persons providing poor management. But hey we are now saving $300k per year so it’s alright.

School Children knew that the School for Children would not be finished on time. Still, our un-elected miss-management committee (government) continued to tell us lies until they simply couldn’t lie about it being ready, anymore. Then they told us different lies about delayed windows. FFS they really, really believe we are stupid.

  37. Doors and Windows says:

Doors or windows here or there. Please plan to finish and furnish the building by the end of November so that it can be ready for the beginning of the next term. Ensure all the kinks are be ironed out in December and have an orderly start to next school term in January 2023. Transfer the Althea children to Clarence Building while the old Althea building is demolished and rebuilt for the next school year.

Obviously, it should have started in 2018. It’s now 2022. The pledges and expertise were there and refused for nefarious reasons.

We also need to see send in moving the HOA and court to something purpose built perhaps in the land near the government building. This would free up more space for the school to flourish as well as providing a fit for purpose facility for our government and courts of law.

Are you not forgetting some things like the $40M taken from social security and handed our to so-called fisher men and farmers as well as businesses that have been inoperable for decades. Oh there is also the $3M paid to badges to catch go fast vessels.

  43. Elsa says:

Positive vibes, you confirmed their point. One cannot say fir certain that buildings in the condition of the schools (with no windows and doors) will be completed if he/she has no control over certain things such as the shipment of goods.

  44. Lilly says:

I fir sure though everything was on sight when those promises were made.

  45. Sight says:

Premier and Minister, do not allow anyone to tell you nonsense and you repeat it to the public. It was obvious the school would not be completed, even a small child could see that. In the end you will look bad. It is better to surprise the public and finish earlier than declared than to attempt to raise expectations gving an unrealistic date and then disappoint.

  46. Butting Head says:

  49. Guess What? says:

I wonder if all decent persons in this Country have gone to permanent sleep, leaving the open space for negative comments all the way. Virtually all comments are toxic as if the Premier is demon possessed, chronic illiterate and block headed. For God’s sake, this gentleman has a PhD and has produced great minds at HLSCC over the years. Whatever you blog here is read worldwide. Over the years its always toxic comments most of the time as if we are at war with ourselves. These people are doing their best in the circumstance. If you think you know better and can do it better, wait for next election and contest. Why are we running rouge to kill all the chicken on the street simply because the government wanted to please the people by putting the ESHS project on a tight construction project. Orders were placed for materials and delivery dates were secured but it turned out that suppliers turned around to requested for more time. People, criticism should be constructive and not destructive. Anything less than good advice to these leaders to assist them in making better decision going forward is evil.

  50. How the budget looking.. says:

That’s what we need to know as of now, is the budget under, over or on par.I know a lot of money and time went into the rush to have it done for September.

  51. Education Dept says:

Speaking about vibes. Why on God’s earth the school continues to make parents pay for a stupid VIDE that teachers DO NOT USE and just to collect dust. Some parents have it very hard to come up with this money for this archaic device just for the school to con them out of their hard earned money. But then again, I heard that it’s the Ministry that forces it on the parents as a money making scheme/racket.

  52. Scapegoat says:

The building still need to print, plus light fixtures, the flooring need to be done, plus plumbing fixtures need to be install, Just saying.
