Fahie sends notice of absence to HOA Speaker

Premier Andrew Fahie

Former Premier of the Virgin Islands Andrew Fahie has officially sent word to the House of Assembly (HOA) informing them of his absence from the latest sitting.

Since his arrest at the Miami-Opa Locka Airport in late April, the First District Representative has missed one sitting of the House and missing another two would have put him in danger of being removed as District Representative.

Under the rules that govern the HOA, Fahie stood in danger of having to vacate his seat if he is absent in any one session of the House for more than three consecutive sittings without the written leave of the Speaker.

However, Speaker of the House Corine George-Massicote announced that Fahie gave notice of his absence from the current sitting.

“Please note that the following members have been given notice of their absence from today’s sitting, Minister for Labour, Immigration and Natural Resources Honourable Melvin Turnbull, Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro and member for the First District Andrew Fahie,” the Speaker said, giving notice of the absentees from the HOA.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley had previously stated he did not feel the standing orders of the House were amended to allow a member to attend a virtual HOA sitting if they were unable to be present in person.

The Premier has also consistently mentioned that the First District Representative should focus on his upcoming trial and not on HOA matters.

Fahie, who is currently on house arrest in Miami, Florida, is facing life imprisonment if convicted on the drug trafficking and money laundering charges brought against him by the United States government. His trial is expected to commence on July 18.

If I was the head coach and I was truly innocent and may have been framed, the first thing I or any other innocent person who loved their country would do is send a long letter proclaiming my innocence and disappointment in my removal without having the chance to prove my innocence in Court which Is the right of every citizen. This silence reeks of shame, indifference and a dash of guilt.

Sure we will all like to hear directly from him as to what he was doing down at Opa Locka Airport on the morning of April 28th, 2022. But is the House of Assembly the appropriate forum?

  8. Interesting but.. says:

Some how I feel he was asked to give notice of his absence in order to keep the circus going. The alternative is three absence and he would be removed.

If he is remove I doubt at this stage the Governor would agree to a bi-election. We would have to go back to the polls and none of the current members stand a chance of been re-elected.

This place is a poppy show.

A video surfaces they calling for resignation. A former premier and “still current” district 1 rep on house arrest with ankle monitor in a foreign country for drug conspiracy charges and not one peep about resignation.

But there is an old African proverb, “when you focus on the snake, the scorpion enters freely”

People do good and bad but no one is condoning his situation in the slightest. If he didnt allegedly involve himself in this he could have been a decent politician.

The question is who ever “takes over” will they be as earnest & steadfast about improving through action & maintaining the idea of the Virgin Islands as a paradise?

He really seemed about the people in his own way but is also a major disappointment to the people.

Who are we left with politically does not look bright either way UK or United party. Will they make life easier or harder? Are we to become a over taxed surveillance & police state with homelessness as other ‘modern countries’?

Meanwhile our politicians turn snobby & stiffly ineffective in an attempt to impress the UK rather than represent the people?

No one wants him back in office dont make it seem that way but we need someone who will do the job as the people’s representative.

Last we saw the current premier was speaking for the governor as if the governor cant speak for himself when it comes to maintaining that idea of paradise, in relation to the apply named police in paradise PR blunder.
