FIFA boss: BVI could produce next Messi or Ronaldo
The BVI could one day produce the next Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, FIFA President Gianni Infantino declared as the territory officially opened its new Football Association Technical Centre at Greenland, East End.
Infantino said the upgraded facility will give young footballers a place to develop their talent, dream big and potentially rise to the highest levels of the sport.
“The next Messi or the next Ronaldo or the next Maradona or the next Pele may well be born here,” Infantino told those gathered for the opening. He added that even if the BVI does not produce a global superstar, football can help create “better citizens” by teaching young people discipline, resilience and how to respond to defeat.
On September 26, Deputy Governor David Archer Jr., government ministers, football technocrats, enthusiasts and other officials gathered at Greenland for the ceremony, which marked a major milestone for football development in the territory. Infantino praised BVI Football Association President Avanell “Clarkie” Morton and his team for directing FIFA funding towards developing the sport locally.
The FIFA Forward-supported project includes a new artificial playing surface and improvements to drainage, changing facilities, washrooms and security fencing. The centre is expected to serve national teams, domestic competitions, clubs, schools and youth programmes.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, who was in London for constitutional negotiations, said the improved centre will allow the BVI to host more international friendlies and competitive matches while strengthening youth programmes.
Infantino’s visit formed part of a wider Caribbean tour, including stops in Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, and St Kitts and Nevis. The FIFA-funded gift also comes as Infantino campaigns for another term as FIFA president. He has confirmed he will seek re-election in March 2027.

Messi and Ronaldo don’t look like the majority of us; please use Pele as the standard. After all, he was the best all time, and he paved the way when there was no path.
