FINAL ELECTION RESULTS: No clear winner! Coalition likely

The counting of ballots for this year’s general elections concluded around 10:30pm on Monday, April 24, 2023, and in the end, no one party had a clear majority.

To win the government, a party has to get at least seven of the total 13 seats up for grabs. Each of territory’s four main political organisations earned at least one seat. The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) claimed six, the National Democratic Party (NDP) claimed three, the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) also won three, and Progressives United (PU) claimed one. As is customary, the tallying of the ballots happened inside the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town.

Below is a breakdown of the results:

The Karl Dawson has won his race to cement the First Electoral District as a VIP stronghold. Here are the D1 results:

Karl Dawson (VIP): 452
Chad George: 260
Sylvia Romney-Moses: 153

Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement has maintained his stronghold in the Second Electoral District and has cemented his place in the House of Assembly for another consecutive term. The D2 results are as follows:

Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull (PVIM): 560
Troy Christopher: 303
Marieta Headley: 116

Incumbent Julian Fraser has proven himself immoveable, winning the Third Electoral District for a seventh term.

Julian Fraser (PU): 459
Aaron Parillon:  347
Kevin Smith: 186

In the Fourth Electoral District (D4), the VIP’s Luce Hodge-Smith has won the race to become a legislator for the first time. She edges out Sandy Harrigan-Underhill of the NDP.  The D4 results are as follows:

Luce Hodge-Smith (VIP): 322 votes
Sandy Harrigan-Underhill: 285 votes
Ian Smith: 145 votes
Rosita Scatliffe-Thompson: 12 votes

In the Fifth Electoral District, incumbent Kye Rymer decimated his lone competitor Marvin Blyden to reclaim his seat in the House of Assembly. The D5 results are as follows:

Kye Rymer (VIP) 840 votes
Marvin Blyden – 342 votes

Over in the Sixth District, Myron Walwyn has unseated incumbent Alvera Maduro-Caines to return as a legislator in the House of Assembly. The D6 results are as follows:

Myron Walwyn (NDP): 736 votes
Alvera Maduro-Caines: 419 votes

District Seven incumbent and yesterday’s Premier, Dr Natalio Wheatley escaped on top with a relatively marginal lead to officially stamp himself as a second-term legislator. The D7 results are as follows:

Natalio Wheatley (VIP): 487 votes
Perline Scatliffe-Leonard: 367 votes

NDP Chairman Marlon Penn has again stamped his dominance in Eighth Electoral District and defeated the VIP’s Allen Wheatley to hold on to his seat for a fourth consecutive term. The D8 results are as follows:

Marlon Penn (NDP): 885
Allen Wheatley: 319

Vincent Wheatley has been re-elected as the Ninth Electoral District Representative. He clobbered his one-time party-mate Shereen Flax-Charles and two others.

Vincent Wheatley (VIP): 491
Coy Levons: 415
Shereen Flax: 239
Vernon Vanterpool: 31

The premier of our territory NEEDS to come from the at large candidates. NOT ONE of the district reps got more than 900 votes….. it doesn’t make ANY sense that our next premier would have been voted in by less that 900 people… NO SENSE. Pick one of the at large.

  22. Remember Fraser... says:

VIP bullied you and called you a one-man party. Now guess who need one man to form a government. We are counting on a coalition between NDP PVIM and PU. The VIP does not need ANY ACCESS TO OUR MONEY OR MINISTRIES. And the fate of this country CANNOT BE LEFT TO THEIR MAJORITY VOTE IN THE HOUSE. Country over self! Country over self!

The evil forces split the party. That was the only way for the evil party to win the last time. When the facts of the Senegal man came to light, you guys were meant to see that the split had everything to do with spiritual warfare. Your wrestle is not against flesh or blood but our God is greater. He is allowing another chance for restoration. The country is depending on the non-VIP parties to put differences aside and form a strong coalition. Fully investigate the wrongdoings of the most corrupt VIP government in the history of the bvi.

  36. suggestion says:

my suggestion for the next election is not individual choices but the party example at the districts let the people vote for whatever party they want to run their district and for the entire island let them vote again for whichever party they want to rule not for individuals. many countries doing this.

  37. @ Ronnie - Premier says:

I approve this message. He’s the best out of all the lot who can lead this country forward with strength and integrity.

  38. just a thought says:

Would have been good if this story had included the total number of registered voters in each district as well as the total number voting so we could see what percentage of the totals the winners are.

  45. Busy Bee says:

Anyone notice that three of the districts carried more total votes for opponents than for the winner? That is, winning with less than 50% of the vote…

2nd – Fraser had 74 fewer votes than his 2 opponents totalled.
4th – Hodge-Smith collected 120 fewer votes than her three opponents totalled together.
9th – Wheatley had 194 fewer total votes than his collective opposition mustered together.

Not exactly a “strong” showing for the VIP.

  46. Tally says:

What the results don’t tell us is voter turn out. The total votes for district representatives come out to 8,152. It was recently reported there were a total 0f 16,000 voters in the Territory. Thus, it looks like that voter turn out was just shy of 51%. In other words, it appears that about half the voters either did not care or did not like their choices.

  47. Des says:

What a chocie for PM – the best is Natalio Wheatley.
