Finance Ministry staff gets bonus cash for exceptional service

The government has approved extra funds for some staff members of the Finance Ministry who have provided exceptional service over the years, especially during the annual budget period.

Some $68,188.58 was recently approved by Cabinet for Finance Ministry staff members who have shown exceptional performance, dedication, and who provided a significant amount of overtime service throughout the years.

During the budget debates which just ended, legislator Shereen Flax-Charles bemoaned the plight of some staff members of the Finance Ministry that she said have been doing extra work over the years because some ministries make late budget submissions.

In the meantime, Cabinet also approved a payment of honoraria to public servants who worked substantially outside of their normal hours and who have performed in their areas of work for an extended period as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An amount of $219,192.71 was approved for those individuals for work done from February 24 to December 21, 2021.

It is clear that this is a legitimate way to buy votes. Why is the money being given mere months before election? Why couldn’t it have been given at the end of 2021?

Ayah people a$$backards mehson. If they worked lots of overtime that means they earned a significant amount more money than their annual salaries. Why throw more money at them for doing their jobs with an overtime incentive? That money could have helped struggling families. The white man really need to take that place from ayah. B.V.I government as useless as the black Democrats in the U.S. Destroy and corrupt everything they touch.I actually hate that f@#king place. Besides the natural beauty the B.v.I is a sh!thole.

No one in Government deserves any bonuses until the country runs smoothly and we have great infrastructure. There’s no need to pay anyone any more than their salary, plus overtime if they legitimately work it and are non-managerial.

  9. Stupes says:

The payments are for persons who worked and were not paid overtime! Most Government workers are not paid any overtime, but are expected to work longer than usual hours when necessary. Usually, there is no issue since extra time is usually within reason. However, covid was an anomaly in the sense that some persons really worked lots of extra hours and for an extended perios and got no extra money. This decision of Cabinet was meant to address that situation. Really wish some of you ppl who sit blogging on stuff you know nothing about would consider how your disinformation can affect ppl who do not know better. Where does it say that these payments are in addition to overtime????

  12. Handing out cash!? says:

What could go wrong with this?

  13. Why says:

think the point that you are missing is why, and why workers in Finance? Why not another department with teams busting their tails while being under-resourced? If they were working exceptional hours, then pay them overtime which is justifiable. Picking them out for reward in this way is not. The Premier owes the country an explanation as this does not make sense. I really don’t understand how this could have got through Cabinet and would like to be enlightened.

This is more about paying people for their silence during the COI Investigations

  16. Mr. Gov., Mr. Premier and Deputy G says:

Everyone needs a cash infusion. The continuous rise in cost of consumable goods has gobbled up the take home power of the average to upper salaried take home check.
Worst yet, are the retired former employees who are still owed increments dating back almost a decade. This cannot and should never be considered humane or business as usual. This is just a very foul way of treating decent, hard working people.
Even more egregious are the sufferings of the senior citizens and the elders. Their suffering is compounded because their loved ones finances are stretched to the bare minimum, while waiting years to receive their increments and or a raise, none of which is yet to come.. Medical evaluations and procedures, for example, are often being put off now. This should not be occurring in the 21st century
Moreover, the news is saturated daily with the waste and corruption of government and the people’s money, but the people are not getting what they have already worked for. This is reminiscent of brutal dictators of a by gone era. Is that where our current leaders are taking us?

If not then, please halt the current practices of governing and spending. Begin taking care of the people. Pay the people their increments. Then, fix our schools; improve our education product, fix our sewage system.
And last, fix the laws and loopholes that allow rampant white-collar thievery of government money. Put any fancy name like corruption you want to it but at the end of the act, it is thievery..
To end, we need our increments, please give the to us

  17. @ Stupes says:

Where you see anyone blogging about that extra money being in addition to a bonus?

You should read before being so quick to blog.

Persons are concerned about such a large sum of money being allotted in the Budget for distribution to some people in one Ministry.

  18. tigress says:

Seems similar to Fahie’ selective stimulus package to a small sector of the population. Why the premier think he is doing different now? Did the finance department vaccinate and operate the covid hotline? He made a big boo-boo if you give one give all or none at all or else keep it quiet so the rest of us dont know. This spells trouble and your governor is smiling at how we cause trouble snd division among our selves

  19. Now says:

Where is England when we need them; they better come for the BVI now. This Government just proves we can not pilot our own plane.

  20. Cause Problem says:

How did the Premier cause a problem? All Head of Departments could have submitted overtime for their staff or asked for a bonus for their work. I recognise we love to blame the Premier for everything. If you do not know the Government system, I pardon you, but if you are in the system, start with your supervisor and climb the ladder. I am sure you will find the issue before reaching the Premier.

  21. What about them? says:

What about them? Their Head of Department should have made a case. Btw the last time I checked, some of them got extra pay for the work they did.

Also, BVIHSA is in control of their funds. If they wanted to give bonuses they could.

  22. Who Said says:

Could have helped struggling families…..You could have struggling families in the Ministry of Finance as well. Don’t think that because some people have Government jobs, they are not struggling. Some can go home at 4:30; others stay late to ensure invoices are paid so we can buy our children something for Christmas. I could say much more but will stop for now.

  23. Why the Premier? says:

Why does the Premier need to explain? Tell me the Financial Secretary needs to explain, which he did in a Cabinet Paper. Oh! Sorry, only Cabinet decisions are seen by the Public, not the Cabinet Paper. Well, it is what it is. The Premier does not need to explain anything.

You want an explanation, ask the Director of Communications.
