First 40-foot container of recyclables head to US from BVI

Green and Clean VI, is getting ready to ship its first container of hurricane associated trash out of the British Virgin Islands.
The 40-foot container of recyclable items weighing approximately 25.7 metric tonnes will be US-bound as early as Friday, Managing Director of the materials reclamations facility Julie Swartz told BVI News Thursday, July 26.
She said the recyclable items came from mainly Virgin Gorda and other outer islands such as Necker and Moskito and, to a lesser extent, the main island of Tortola.
“There is a little bit of everything,” she said.
According to Swartz, the items range from glass, metal cans, plastics, and electrical cables.
Two other shipments will be leaving the territory in the next three weeks.
Swartz said three containers with metal will head to Asia while another container of household items will head to the US.
“We are just getting started,” she remarked.
More than money
With the help of a Florida-based recycling company called All Caribbean, the items will be sold to recycling companies in the US and Asian markets.
Swartz said it will cost her company ‘thousands of dollars’ to ship the garbage off and at times the turnover is little to nothing.
However, it is ‘not so much about the money’, she said.
“Nobody’s getting rich, you pray that on the day your products are sold it will be a good day on the commodities market. But this is about preserving the place that I have lived for 32 years,” she said.
“All these costs come out of our pockets one way or the other. You have to ship it, process it, pay employees, and make sure it is clean.”
The Virgin Gorda based for-profit company has been in operation for the past few years.

According to the BVI government press releases late last year a company named Kausina Energy & Environment which R. Skelton shortened to Kausina VI was the contractor to recycle and export the hurricane trash from the Coxheath dump site. It does not appear that Kausina has fulfilled any of their recycle/export obligations for the last 7 months. Maybe the BVI government should hire a ‘local’ contractor such as Ms. Swartz’s Clean & Green BVI to clean up the smouldering mess at Coxheath.

One container!! Really!! There’s enough trash and s**t on the island to fill an aircraft carrier. Better off filling the container with the government and exporting them or just drop it in deep water
