First-timer Ramon G wins the 2019 Soca Monarch competition

Newcomer Ramon G is the BVI’s new Soca Monarch for the 2019 emancipation festivities.

He collected a total of 226 points — one point more than the defending champion, JJ, to walk away with the grand prize of $6,500 and the winning trophy.

Fifth to perform during Saturday night’s competition, Ramon G executed his song ‘Rampage’ to perfection with a full complement of dancers and stage pyrotechnics.

Ramon G’s well-put-together display earned him the Best Stage Performance award as well as Best Arrangement.

Ramon G, who only recently commenced his career as a vocal artiste after nearly 20 years as a drummer and producer, told BVI News the victory was significant because it was a tribute to his late father.

“It’s overwhelming … putting on this hat and coming out here and executing like this here. It was my mission, it was my goal and it feels really good to accomplish this especially taking the crown from a very talented man [JJ, who placed second],” the new-crowned champion said.

He also made it clear he will be aiming to defend title his title next year. He said he also plans to enter the Calypso competition and claim that crown.

Meanwhile, first runner-up JJ won the Best Lyrics award and collected a $2,000 cash prize for his song entitled ‘All of that’.

The second runner-up spot went to Diffy for his song ‘Sip Sip’. He won $1,500.

The other competitors on the night included Mr Blues, Pascal, Jim Bob, Teejay and Chap Chap.
