He is widely known for blazing the runway.

But Kevin Fisher is also no walk-over in football – a claim supported by his latest display of sheer genius in the 2016/17 National Football League.

The Islanders Football Club player has earned the coveted Golden Boot Award after scoring 13 goals throughout the season.

The other top scorers – Mohammed Kachour from Sugar Boys and Richard Morgan from One Love – tied for second with 11 goals apiece.

From the outset, Fisher had his eyes on the biggest individual prize.

“I feel good actually because that was my plan from the beginning of the league,” he told BVI News Online, adding that he was only able to play in 11 matches.

“I played a lot of games and missed a couple of them. But every time I played, I tried to score as many goals as I can.”

Fisher, who also coaches youngsters who have a knack for the sport, told BVI News Online that he intends to become a professional football player.

“This Golden Boot Award is my first one ever. I will use it as a reminder of what I am capable of.”

“My goal is to be the best footballer that I can be,” he said while noting that he will further pursue football when he jets off to college soon in the United States.

“I will always play to the best of my ability.”

Fisher also offered a word of encouragement to youngsters who are interested in football.

“Train hard; don’t give up. Put in your personal time and take every game seriously,” he said while expressing gratitude especially to other members of the Islanders team.

His team-mates also have much to celebrate; this as Islanders emerged winner of the overall league.

They went through the 2016/17 competition undefeated – their last triumph being a 2-0 scoreline against the Sugar Boys.

Sugar Boys finished second, and Rebels claimed third place with a 1-0 win over One Love.

In the meantime, the presentations of awards for the National Football League will take place at the end of the President’s Cup final on Sunday (February 12) at the A O Shirley Recreational Grounds, Tortola.

The Top Four teams from the just-concluded competition will feature in the President’s Cup, with the Islanders facing One Love in the first semi-final. Rebels will take on Sugar Boys in the second semi-final.

Both games will be played on Saturday (February 11) at the A O Shirley Recreational Grounds at 5pm and 7pm respectively.
