Flax-Charles invited to join NDP

Former legislator Shereen Flax-Charles

Former Junior Minister for Trade and for Tourism Shereen Flax-Charles has been invited to join the National Democratic Party  (NDP) and potentially contest the next general election under that party’s banner.

Flax-Charles served one term as an elected representative under the previous Andrew Fahie administration and later contested the 2023 general election as a member of the Ronnie Skelton-led Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM).

On the June 16 episode of the NDP radio show, Flax-Charles was introduced as a “potential candidate” of the newly-merged PVIM and NDP.

During the show, she was asked what she would do to advance tourism if she were re-elected on the NDP ticket in the 2027 election.

“One of the challenges we’ve faced in tourism for years is that funds are not budgeted to properly market the territory. Our entire budget is what the USVI uses for marketing only and they double it. We’ve stopped doing international events like the Miami Open and culinary events around the world. Those things used to give us good publicity. We also need to market more within the Caribbean because, contrary to popular belief, there is money in the region,” Flax-Charles explained.

Known for her firm and frank stance on national issues, Flax-Charles was the only minister who was commended for her handling of grants in the COI-commissioned COVID-19 Assistance Grants Audit Report.

The report revealed several instances of mismanagement of funds, but singled out Flax-Charles as the leader who made the greatest attempt to issue payments to third parties as the policy at the time required.

The report said her compliance rate in this area was four times that of former Premier Andrew Fahie who was one of the worst offenders in this area.

Although she was praised for her handling of the personal grants, Flax-Charles was called out in the report for her handling of grants given for district projects.

The report said the former legislator undertook multiple community projects totalling $54,370.60. However, she retained one contractor to undertake five projects but no contracts or other binding agreements were signed to ensure that these were completed and done to an acceptable standard.

The audit report also claims that the files do not show any approval from the Financial Secretary or the Minister of Finance for these projects. It is unclear whether the contractor was paid upfront or after the works were completed.

Ms. Flax, why do we bother spend money on marketing the Virgin Islands when we market ourselves as a xenophobic society??? We market ourselves as always calling the “white man” evil, colonialist, and every demonic name possible. The same expats we speak evil of we are spending hundreds of thousands or even millions to bring here and when they come we tell them welcome but only your money we want. Go back home when your stay is over. Don’t come back to buy our land, don’t come to take our jobs, don’t come to take our daughters, don’t come to be boss over us, just your money we want. WE BETTER WAKE UP BECAUSE THE WORLD IS BIGGER THAN US!!!!

    • To whom concern says:

Whether we say, market or print it, truths are truths?

The 21st century so far has been one of lies, deceit, dishonesty, derelect thoughts and actions by politicians, the masses containing fraudsters, fools and the foolish.

Wishing the lady of the gem of the VI great success. Just hope the necessary study and home work was done and the results are ready to be politically distributed.

Personally, some in the the ninth, my district, have gained tremendous financial security since last, while others continue to suck salt, even after asking for a little assistance, and others still are viewed through unfavorable lenses, complainers and more.

I personally wish the lady much success in her decided political endeavor as, her assistance was beneficial in a time of need when asked for.

Never mind the village minds’s noise, give it your best effort, as the great familial ancestoral spirits watchet over.

Keep in mind, however, voters seldom make that critical decision about candidates based on informed political analysis and study. They must be thoroughly educated in the campaign and not just with slogans and negative expressions.

When you find out who the contractor was that got the contracts then you would be able to connect the dots. The best thing for Shereen to do is to take several seats. She won the first time because there was a wave. It ain’t got no wave now so dead in the water. Don’t do it!

  10. Hmmm says:

One has to ask the question, why the NDP has been losing elected and former elected members so frequently? Alvera left to join the VIP. Lorna left them and aligned with the VIP not once but twice and they lost Myron who was the life of that party. All of this happened under Penn being the leader. It would be interesting to see who they get to run with them. So far I am not impressed.

It’s the greedy bill that emboldened natalio Wheatley to give Vybz Kartel quarter million USD, because elected again or not he and his colleagues bread done butter in the future, but I see the same thing that Shereen flax is yearning for the nostalgic days of traveling to promote tourism, but what happens to web advertising? Because it will be more of the travel that natalio Wheatley is doing, and they only got you to join to look to break the comb of to leaderless bunch, Shereen did you ask them which one is the leader? They scared of the alliance.
