A forensic audit to be done on the finances of government is expected to be completed within the VIP government’s first 100 days in office, according to Premier Andrew Fahie.

Government is hiring an unspecified firm to conduct the audit.

Speaking at the House of Assembly on Tuesday, Premier Fahie said the “comprehensive forensic audit” will not be exclusive to the territory’s finances but is promised to reveal the “overall status” of the Government of the Virgin Islands.

“This process of assessment will allow us an accurate assessment of where we are so that we can better manage the expectations [of residents] and build a strong foundation on which to build upon as your new government,” the Premier said.

Since Fahie said the audit will be completed within his administration’s first 100 days, the completion date of the process would be around June 2019. Fahie and is ministers were all sworn into office by March 2 but were only sworn into the House of Assembly March 12.

@small man, It is the opinion of the majority of us that you and your band of brothers and sisters have a lot of thanking to do for us rescuing the ship from the shoals reefs and rocks; for we were all going down together. But u know what? We got to love you all cauz we are all one people; brothers n sisters. If we sink or float we float together. One BVI, one people; BVIStrong

Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo famous dictum is applicable: campaign in poetry and govern in prose. On the campaign trail, things seems easy, everything seems possible, the outlook is lofty and rosy. Things always look easier to accomplish from the outside. However, governing is another story. Government is required and expected to deliver high quality services in a timely manner at a reasonable cost. Governing is messy, challenging and requires adequate funding. The territory’s financial status and effective stewardship is critical to charting a sustainable path forward.

Thus, the Premier’s initiative in assessing the financial status is an important step: “This process of assessment will allow us an accurate assessment of where we are so that we can better manage the expectations [of residents] and build a strong foundation on which to build upon as your new government,” the Premier said.

Moreover, based on the Premier’s statement, and having taken the baton from the NDP, VIP should conduct a government-wide situational analysis, strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats(SWOT) analysis……etc and used findings as a guide to charting the way forward, to developing a Territorial Development Plan (TDP)……etc.

Can’t plan the future without knowing what assets you have (or don’t). I hope that if any nefarious activities are found that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. The Territory will undoubtedly move forward if we start bringing people to account, so that we, as a society, can get into our heads that we have abide by rules and regulations for the greater common good, instead of the do what you want, ain’t nobody gonna catch me attitudes.

There is no way a forensic audit on government finances can be completed in 100 days u less the company doing it has a team of about 10 persons at each government office at the same time.
